Baby Boom raises over population concerns

QUOTE
Federal Labor MP Kelvin Thompson announced a 14-point plan last night to slow the growth rate, including a drastic reduction in migrant intake and restricting benefits for families with three or more kids.

Will restricting benefits for families with 3 or more children really slow the population growth rate? They talk about stopping the baby bonus as well. I don't see how restricting benefits will do anything except leave more families struggling. The government encourages mothers to stay at home yet they make that so hard. I will go back to work one day (DS is only 4mths) but i don't want to feel forced into that decision

I had my Children because I wanted them, not because of the baby bonus or family benefits.

So no, I don't think restricting benefits would stop most people from having more than 2 children.

I agree, I have 4 children and don't get any benefits so it didn't even rate in our equations when planning our family, although I imagine there are plenty of families out there that are different. As for the baby bonus....well don't shoot me...but I think it should be scrapped.

Whilst I think that very few people have children for the benefits, I do believe that people who are thinking of adding to their brood take the benefits into account, you have to work out if it is financially viable for you to have another child, it is not romantic, but it is a consideration. And there is a big difference between this and having children simply to recieve the benefits, I am sure there are plenty of people out there that would have more children if they could afford it.
