Whilst we would all like to aimals to have permanent loving homes at times these homes need to be found for animals, this is a quick list to of places that maybe able to help or point you in the right dierection. Whether you are looking for a new family member or looking to do the best by one.

This post is in no way making light of rehoming pets and I have no personal experience with these sites or organisations, I just wanted to provide some places for people to start. It is up to individuals to research further.

I went to blacktown holding facility today...it was so awful to there, ( i think my hormones made it worse). I was really annoyed.. I found a 6 month old pup who was gorgeous as, he was very friendly. I immedietly wanted to give him a home.. but he came in as a stray and was involved in a dog fight.. therefore no one is allowed to adopt him and if the owners don't claim him, then he will be put down..

I think this is extremely unfair. And i don't believe a 6 month old pup would aggressivley approach itself for a fight, I would understand if another dog provoked it.. even so, for it to have its life ended because of this i think is just cruel

Can I recommend www.saveadog.org.au in Victoria (Malvern, Melbourne). They have cats and dogs and are a no-kill shelter (so they are always overrun!) They will spend lots of time to make sure you get just the right animal though. I foster cats from them and they really do care.

Would also like to add http://www.workingdogrescue.com.au whose primary function is to save working dog breeds from being euthanased in council pounds and shelters and find new homes for them. They cover the entire east coast of Australia which encompasses Qld, NSW and Vic.

Its a difficult decision to rehome a loved pet, and the emotion involved makes it hard to work through the process in an orderly and effective manner. This post will get you started on 'how', and I ask that you post any other ideas that have brought success, to help other pets in need.

1. Make a list of your pet's physical attributes, health status, training, and other positive qualities. If your pet has not yet been wormed, vaccinated, desexed and microchipped, you need to get this done to improve your pet's chances of finding a new forever home.

2. Make a list of the 'downsides' of your pet. For example, if your dog has shown aggression towards people or other animals. In some cases, for example, where a dog has attacked people or other animals rehoming may not be possible as the dog is not suitable. Remember, if you pass on 'defective' property, such as an aggressive dog, you are still liable at law for any damage it causes. Yes, you can be sued. If there are downsides, you should try to address them - for example, by training - or use them to make suitability criteria for your pet's forever home. For example, if your cat doesn't like other cats, then you could stipulate a home with no other pets. If your pet is a danger to others (particularly people), the alternative is to have them put to sleep. This should be a last resort, and is not always appropriate even when the animal has killed or seriously injured another animal or even a human. It depends on the circumstances of the case, so please talk to someone before making this decision!

3. Getting the message out. You need to do this sooner, rather than later!
* Take a great picture of your pet (nicely groomed, sitting or down position, showing face) for publicity purposes.
* Write a blurb about your pet, and your need for a good home - it should be between 50-100 words long and invite further enquiries (you can supply more details on request). If rehoming is for health reasons (yours or the pets), overseas travel or a death or major upheaval in the family you could mention it. If its because you've had a baby or are moving to a new rental, mentioning the reason makes the dog look 'bad' people assume you are rehoming because you no longer trust it, and clearly its badly behaved. Don't ruin your dog's chances of living!
* Do a flyer, and PDF it.
* Put the flyer up at the Vet's, the Pet Shop, the Post Office, the Community Notice Board, the local shops, and anywhere that will let you stick it in their window or on your notice board.
* email your flyer to your entire list of contacts and friends, and ask them to circulate it.
* Contact your breeder, and ask if they will assist you in rehoming the dog. Good breeders will often assist for no charge.
* Contact the breed association, and see if they have a listings page for dogs in need of a home.
* Contact the breed rescue service, and list the dog with them.
* Contact general sites that rehome or sell dogs, like Dogzonline, and list your dog.
* Use classified advertising in your local paper and in your local 'major' papers.

Expect rehoming your pet using advertising to take some time. It could be weeks, it could be months. Do not ask for payment - and provide ALL of the pet's accessories and equipment as part of the deal. It helps!

4. Picking a new owner is also important! Interview them to make sure they aren't going to mistreat your pet, and visit the new home if possible. Discuss how they will manage your pet, and their particular 'characteristics'. Choose the best fit, not the first fit.
If your advertising is unsuccessful, your next step is to surrender your pet to a rescue service. Its important to select a "no kill" service (see the places listed in the posts above), rather than simply dropping your pet at the RSPCA or the local pound. Animals don't usually get very long at these two places because of the sheer volume of animals surrendered each year, and many are put to sleep immediately because they are "unsellable". "Unsellable" means your pet is too old, too timid, to aggressive, not cute and fluffy, too big, too untrained.... and on and on. Most pets are "unsellable", which is why there are over a quarter of a million cats and dogs euthanased each year.

I didn't realise this thread existed until now. Companion Animal Rescue and Adoption (CARA) is a Canberra based rescue group that responsibly rescues from pounds and foster and rehomes dogs and cats on death row. They do rehome interstate too.
