Hi ladies
I've just bought my first sewing machine...a Janome DC3050 on special for $499 Now I have no idea what to start with as a project! I have sewed before at school and made basic garments like a simple skirt and shirts etc but I was never very good (actually, I only took the subject at all because I got kicked out of Latin...). Any suggestions for where to begin?? I bought it mainly so that I could make basic kids things for DS, particularly fancy dress costumes etc but I'm not completely anti making things for myself or for the home if I could be certain they wouldn't look as awful as my early efforts in the '80s when I was at school... Also, I need to stock up on a basic bits & pieces kit - what do you think is essential before getting started? (I mean things like pins, scissors, tailor's chalk, tape measure etc) Thanks in advance! Hi and welcome
In the pinned FAQ thread there are a few tips that may help - like a list of basic tools/equipment. As for a starting project I suggest a simple bag, like a library bag for your DS ? Also things like a pincushion for yourself, oven mitts (this months beginners challenger) Any other questions you have? There is also a tonne of free tutorials and patterns in the pinned lists as well HTH |

How very exciting! I have the same machine which DH bought for me 2 years ago and it is still going well.
The first thing I sewed was a pair of pants for DD. That was about the first thing I had ever sewn beside a bunny rug, and I think it went ok. But as GQ said, a library bag should be simple enough and you can embellish it as you like. Have fun with your sewing machine and do come and join the sewing group |
