Can anyone recommend books aimed at children that would be good to help an 8 year old girl and 5 year old boy whose mother died (somewhat) unexpectedly yesterday. Also any books that would help their father/grandparents to know how to help them/what to expect over the coming months/years. Any websites would also be appreciated.

We are all having a difficult time right now and I'm hoping the knowledge of EB can kick start my search for suitable materials. Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry, I have no idea of a suitable book. My heart goes out to that family though.

If you don't get any suitable suggestions here, try calling your local bookstore tomorrow. Often the smaller stores are able to help with suggestions for specialty books. Their school librarian may also be able to assist.

I am so sorry for the loss of the children's mother.

I haven't had to deal with this, but a quick search on Amazon.com came up with this list - (click here), maybe look up your local library online to see if they have any of these titles that may be suitable.

Also this link seemed interesting, although I will admit I haven't read it all.

Lastly, this is a google search/listing using the terms; death, grief, children and cope.

I hope some of this can help you help this family at such a sad and difficult time.

Earlier this year I heard a radio interview with the director of the National Centre for Childhood Grief - this is exactly their area of expertise. They are located in Sydney but if you are elsewhere may be able to help you with info/resources/support and information about local services.
