Hello fellow Miele dishwasher owners,
We have just purchased a dishwasher and read in the manual today that we need to put "salt" in it prior to use. What sort of salt is required and where do I buy it?

TIA,
Jo

When we bought our Miele dishwasher there was a brochure in there saying that the salt was not required in Australia - it was only required in Europe. We haven't used the salt for the whole time we have had it (5 years) and haven't had any problems at all. I love my Miele!!

Congrats on the Miele! You will love it!

I called Miele and asked about this too. They said just to grab a 2kg bag of rock salt from the supermatket and put that in.

We were told that no salt was required as well.

Salt shouldn't be required.
I think it is to do with the "hardness" of the water. Our water is much "harder" than in Europe, so no need to add the salt.

The salt will actually 'soften' the water and give you a better wash result. Most of the town water in Australia is treated so it isn't as important as in some European countries where the water is very 'hard'.

You don't have to add it but I have noticed a difference with it.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I just have to say that I LOVE this dishwasher! The cutlery draw is fantastic! So happy with my decision. wub.gif

Ok, stupid question. I had a look for "rock salt" in my supermarket and couldn't find any. Is it the same as sea salt?? I know it needs to be an unrefined salt, but couldn't work it out from reading the labels.

Thanks again,
Jo
