so now what???
DS is getting is tonsils and adenoids out on Friday for breathign related problems and I was wondering if any of your children have had this surgery and can tell me what to expect.

Pain levels - how did your kids cope?

How much time did they need off school? (been told 7-10 days but not sure)

How long should he stay away from swimming?

Any other tips?

Thanks in advance,

Hi there,

My 5 year old daughter had hers out earlier this year at TCH. She came out of the operation quite spectacularly! Lots of screaming and kicking, so they drugged her until she came out properly in recovery.

She wouldn't eat that night and woke up in the middle of the night in pain but by the next morning she was able to talk and eat.

The nurses were great with pain releif, painstop and panadol as required and some to take home.

She wasn't feeling herself for a few days, but within a week you never would have known anything had happened.

Hi Louy,

My story is very different from the first post, so I only hope it shows how different children react so differently - my DD had hers out earlier this year at age 3 1/2. She came out of op very upset but slept well for the few hours afterwards. In regards to eating, it was lots of days before she ate much again - I couldn't tempt her with anything - tried all the normal ones like icecream, custard, yogurt, jelly - but several people say that cold things don't help. We expected her to be out of action for a week, but it was really 10 days before she was back to her normal self. She certainly didn't attend any of her normal weekly activities for the week though.

Hosp care was good - nurses great. Dr really wanted her to be eating before he let her go home - that caused me distress, but at the same time, they needed her bed so they had no intention of having her in for another night! so we did get to go home the next morning. We found that our daughter was really hanging out for the medication - partic after sleeping, when her throat was dry - so keeping up the fluids, even overnight, was important.

But after those 10 days, we had no tonsilitis this winter - after having it repeatedly for 3 years, so it was worthwhile. Good luck to your little one.

There was also a post about tonsils a week or so ago - might be worth looking at again.

gaf.

Apparently the younger kids seem to bounce back a lot easier.

My 9 year old just had the same surgery 3 weeks ago. She came out of the anaesthetic pretty fiesty too and was in quite a bit of pain but they got on top of that pretty quickly. She was sitting up and eating toast about an hour after surgery and was sent home that afternoon. Pain was managed with panadol and oxycodone for night time, that was pretty full on stuff but she needed it the first few nights. Took about a week before she stopped getting up in the night for panadol top ups and within 10 days she was great.

Operation was on Tuesday and she went to school the following Tuesday. I was going to send her Monday but she had a bit of a rough night Sunday night so I let her sleep in. She would have been fine to go though.

Goodluck

so now what???
Thanks all for your help. I'll go trawling for the other post. It's been a few weeks since I've been on the boards...become addicted to facebook!

My poor little man has developed a nasty cough this week, so I am hoping it wont get in the way of the surgery. He has a breathing obstruction from his tonsils, adenoids and turbinates, so fingers crossed this procedure will turn him into a 10-12 hour night sleeper, less the old man sounding snores... tongue.gif

I have a brain and a uterus. I like to use both.
My brother, who just turned 40 laughing2.gif had his tonsils out a while ago and it really knocked him around. But all the doctors etc said it is much harder for adults to recover and kids normally bounce back pretty uick.

Lucy was the same. She was fine that night and woken to have a bowl of cornflakes the next morning, she coped quite well just having panadol. But a couple of days later stopped drinking at all, so we really had to get it into her. It was a struggle but she was ok. It took her the full 10 days to feel better and a few days after that to be back to her normal self.

The operation had a great effect, the first night was thefirst night of her life she hadn't had sleep apneas, and never did again biggrin.gif
