no there is nothing you need to do to prepare your nipples as such. definitely would not expose them to the sun! by all means though get used to handling your breasts if this isn't something you normally do. some mums find it helpful to gently roll the nipples btw thumb and fore finger.

No, it's not recommended you try to 'toughen up' your nipples. I was a little aprehensive about breastfeeding too as I desperately wanted to do it. You'll find that your bub when just born sucks quite softly compared to when they get a bit bigger so your nipples can get used to it.
Take some Lucas's Paw Paw ointment with you and apply it after each feed (no need to wipe off before a feed) and get as much advice from midwives as you can and use what works for you and your bub. Good luck! |

Breastfeeding is all about attachement and correct positioning, not about how "tough" your nipples are.
The PP's suggestion of talking to the midwives etc and getting as much advice as possible is what will really help you. You could also attend classes run by the ABA aswell. |

Best thing to do would be to go to a breastfeeding class before the baby arrices - teh ABA runs them. A correctly attached baby shouldn't hurt your nipples - I learnt this the hard way! If it does hurt, there is something wrong and needs to be corrected.
Also find a lactation consultant in your area that may be able to come and visit you at home once the baby is here - also my lifesaver!! |

I second the ABA breastfeeding class, and also attend some of their meetings beforehand as it helps to watch other women/babies bfing, and also helps you establish a valuable support system so you know where to turn as soon as you start needing help.
I too have sensitive nipples, and I think we just have to get used to it (unfortunately)! It was painful for some time, but it settles down and really does become so wonderful. I found that sunlight (v. small amounts) daily really helped when they were sore. |
