Hi there

This is a bit of a long shot I know, but worth asking.

A bit of a background as it's been a while since I posted in here.

My triplets were born at 31+3. They have just turned 2 years old & we had a follow up visit with our paed today.

The smallest of our 3 has (untill now) been following along the 3rd centile) However she has lately steadily been falling of it. She will be 2 corrected on 12/10/07 & is 9.12kg so a fair bit below the 3rd centile now.

The Paed has prescribed Periactin tablets to help increase here appetite. I have been told the tablets may make her drowsey & so have to start of on a lower dose & work our way up to 3 x a day.

Has anyone else used periactin tablets? (or anything similar) huh.gif

I am curious to hear other parents thoughts on using drugs to increase appetite. Does it work or is it a short term fix. Has anyone had success with it? Is there something else we should be trying first maybe that we can ask the paed about.

Any thoughts & info would be appreciated as I am a little nervous about the side effects yet on the other hand I am keen to get some weight on her before things get much worse.

Hi M,

I've heard of them and asked numerous times if Drs thought that Shea would benefit (before we put tube in), but don't know anyone personally that has used it. I can't remember all the reasons our old paed didn't want to use it, but as you know Shea's eating is very complex. Strange most paeds want to do the calorie supplement thing before going further.

There's a yahoo feeding forum for more severe feeding issues, where I am sure there will be someone who has used it. There are a lot of prems on the group but it is American and very busy. I'll just go get the address for you:

Actually have you asked this in babies and kids with special needs? There are a few ex-prems in there that don't look here that often any more, and other conditions that may have used it too.

Mum to Cooper and Pinky
Hi,

I just saw this post and altho i spend all my eb time in the disability section I thought I could add to this!

Cooper has CP which causes him to have muscles that move all the time and therefore burn so many calories and has had weight issues since he stopped the bottle and drinking milk around 14 months ol..he is now 2.5.

We see a dietician at the rch melb and Cooper is on Polyjoule which is essentially calories in a powder form which we add to food....we add it to everything it is pretty bland but a slight hint of sweetness.

Cooepr has gained weight steadily on this and now is 11.4 kgs.

YOu can get it from the Chemist but mostly have to order it in. costs around $16 a tin and prob lasts a month or so.

There is also Pediasure that can be added to milk drinks.

Good luck,
Bron
