Birth Cert Question

When my DD was born, (2002) she was given the normal birth cert (Which is rolled up in one of those silver things for birth certs) and a decorative one. I had the decorative one laminated and I have used that whenever a birth cert is needed (School enrollments, Medicare card, Centrelink etc) Now I have just taken time out of work to go pick M up from after school care, line up and get our passport applications processed - they have said they cant use this one as its not a proper birth cert? Is this info correct?? I have the silver thing in storage and Im hoping like hell I can find it as we need to have the passports organised this week, to allow for timing for the trip we have planned (November) So yeah - I want to know if it is an official document? Can it be used? Cheers

Don't count the days, make the days count!
I was led to believe that the decorative one is just for decoration and not cannot be used for official purposes.

That's what I thought too (decorative=decoration and "normal"=legal document). I have DD and DS's decorative ones framed and hanging in their bedrooms and their normal ones filed with DH's and my normal ones.

Yup thats what I thought too, decorative just being that. Our marriage certificate was the same, we were orignally only given the decorative one and ended up having to go and get the offical certificate when someone (cant remember who) refused to accept the dec. one. Amanda

Bummer - my bad - I thought it was a legal document Does anyone know if she has to be there with me?? Bearing in mind the girl that does the applications saw her today for half an hour while she processed mine and DP's and I know her quite well as I go to the post office everyday. Thanks

It does say in the passport application form that the decorative birth certificates are not permitted. I didn't take my children with me when I had my interview and there was no problem as I was the signatory on their applications.

I'm surprised you've been allowed to use it for Centrelink etc, we've always been told we need the "real" one, you need the real one to set up bank accounts too.
