Newborn Jaundice: Precious Days

As Rosemary cuddled her beautiful newborn son in the days after his birth, little did she know he was developing a serious condition. By the fifth day in hospital, his jaundice was severe, with bilirubin levels so high they were off the charts. Her son Callum, now four, has global development delay. Rosemary now seeks to inform others of the possible risks, and of the importance of prompt treatment of severe jaundice in the first precious days after birth.

Rosemary- thankyou so much for sharing your story.

I cried when I read about your early days, as they sound almost identical to ours (including the lack of early diagnosis, even when I knew something was wrong and the begging for the blood test to be performed).

Thankfully, 8 months on, our DD doesn't appear to have any lasting impact from her severe jaundice.

Your son is gorgeous and thankyou for sharing his amazing journey.

All the best.

Thank you for sharing your story. My son had jaundice when he was born, but the nurses and doctors shrugged it off as nothing. Thankfully, we never had any problems associated with it, but its scary to think that something that medical practitioners shrug off can develop into something more serious. Thank you for sharing

Brilliant story, and sorry to hear of your son's difficulties.

My oldest also had severe jaundice due to ABO incomptability. His bilirubin levels were almost that which required a blood transfusion, but thankfully the lights worked quickly and he is so far with out effect.

Thank You so much for sharing your story. I had no idea of the serious implications jaundice can cause. My daughter was slightly jaundice at birth, like many babies are and im frightened to think of all the people we can come across in the medical profession that simple put it down to being a bit yellow and that it is nothing to worry about.

mum to 4 little monkeys
thank you for sharing your story

My DS1 had jaundice as well. On day 3 i was telling the nurses and they didn't believe me. That afternoon a different nurse came on and said 'yes he does and you need to start force feeding him' so i did. I wanted to anyway but felt very unsupported. He never went under the lights as he was only borderline. His levels peaked at day 5, but has never looked back. Now he is nearly 4 and although he has got some attention probs, its defiantly not global.
Ds2 i routine fed every 3-4 after birth and he didnt have jandice.
DD i didnt routine feed and she ended up with jaundice as well. But not bad enough to have her levels tested.
Next bub i hope to routine/ demand feed 3-4h in hope that we dont have jaundice again.

Mad Mumma
Hello,

Thankyou for sharing your story & alerting other parents to be about the seriousness of jaundice.

My DD was born two weeks early & all seemed fine on day 3 when they were preparing to send us home. A nurse (not midwife) came to give me some medicin & said that my DD looked very yellow & that she was going to get a midwife to come have a look at her. The midwife then decided to do the jaundice test & it was found that my DD had a very high level of billirubin (sp?) of 452 & required phototherapy treatment straight away. She was unnder the lights for 4 days & required a drip fpr fluids also. The jaudice was caused by a AB/O incompatabilty & she was diaognoised as being commbs positive.

I can totally realte to you heart ache & aprehension. I was so worried & cried a lot.

I have not found my DD to be lacking in her development as of yet & hands.gif that this doesn't become a concern for us. i can only imagin what you have gone through & still are dealing with.

Thanks again for your story original.gif

My twins last year were born at 30.5 weeks and they spent weeks with phototherapy lights. My daughter was so bad she required a number of blood transfusions. They tested her for everything. They even had a blood specialist sorry i can't spell the specialist haemontologist or something. He couldn't give any reason either. The only thing they could say is that they believe it would go as it came.
Strange thing was there was so many things happening with the twins that i think i thought it was just one of the multiple things to worry about. I put a lot of trust into the doctors and nurses.
My dd1 she also was jaundice and they said at that stage to just put her in the sunlight as much as possible. I think it took a couple of weeks for it to finally disappear but everything turned out fine.

Why Is A Door AJAR... But AJAR Is Not A Door????
Thank you for sharing your story and awaring others to the seriousness this can cause.

my little boy was badly jaundice and at 7 weeks prem and in SCU it was a very scary time for us only 3 weeks ago, as he would do nothing but sleep and wouldnt even have the energy to feed he was very yellow and honestly looked terrible

He spent just over 48 hours under the lights and thankfully that lowered his levels from 387 down to 263....with daily levels tested after that they then dropped to 225, 212 then 187.
we were told anything over 240 was high risk and would need treatment.

He is now alot better but we have been told that he will have his levels done every mth..

here is a pic of our little man only 3 weeks ago
