We're looking at buying a digital camera before xmas & wonder if we'll need a docking station with it?

We're looking at the Canon Powershot A300 which you can get a photo printer for extra but does the docking station do the same thing? or is it for something else.

Anyone know or can help & what camera have you got. We only want a 3 to 3.2mp one.

Hiya

Okay, before I start, let me say that my knowledge of computer-y type stuff is not extensive, so I'm just talking from experience rather than anything else original.gif

We have a digital camera with a docking station (if they are the thingys that you plug into the computer and it instantly downloads all your pics).

Personally, I love the concept of being able to preview your photos before getting them printed.

Having said that, in all honestly, our scanner and copier probably gets more of a work out than the digital camera does.

IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT SOFTWARE YOU HAVE!!!!! Good, easy to use software makes all the difference in the world!

Rather than buying a dedicated photo printer, I would seriously look into buying a really good quality scanner/printer/copier. Our cost about $300, but it allows you to manipulate photos, edit them, change the size/colour/format, crop them, email them... in fact, you name it, it does it, from digital photo or hard copy. Probably the best investment we've made, photo wise.

Goodluck!

hi! now i aint too technical either, but we have a digital camera, and we dont need a docking station to preview our photos. in fact, i do believe *most* cameras come with a USB cable which plugs into your USB port on your computer tower. this sets up another drive thingy and you can preview your photos there. gosh, hope that made sense. from there you can edit, if you have the software, or save onto disk, CD, whatever you like.
docking station seems a waste of money to me, as does a printer because geez, its only 60c to take it to a camera shop and get it printed there.

hope i have helped!

jussy227,

1. I would recommend looking into the Canon Powershot A70 (or even better the A80) rather than the A300. The lack of a zoom on the A300 will limit its usefulness. The A70 will set you back almost $200 more though:

2. You may want to buy this month's issue of Australian Personal Computer - I believe it comes with Paintshop Pro 5 (digital editing software) free on the front cover. The software that comes with the Canon cameras is OK, but not fantastic...

3. I completely agree with davina_1982 regarding printers. Most people are better off not buying one. If you are going to print mainly 4x6 (standard photo size) images, then getting them done at your local camera store (or using an online service like http://www.extrafilm.com.au/orderforms/order_pp_card.htm) will save you a fortune. Inkjet ink is incredibly expensive, and the quality is never going to be as good as what the store can do...
