Hi my dd is nearly 9 weeks old and these past few days feeding from late afternoon has become a drama.

He feeds every four hours and now when I give him his afternoon feed around 4pm it seems like he cant get enough! he feeds for 30 mins has a 5 or 10 min break and he wants more, I give him more and he'll squirm and fidget at the breast and sometimes pull off the breast and try to latch on again himself! I cant settle him down unless I top up with formula something I really dont want to do anymore.

The main problem is that he is having big sleeps and waking up starving hungry and hard to satify. I dont want to wake him

Any suggestions ?

Using Clitter while pg may result in sparkle babies.
Some babies are/act extremely fussy when really tired and even through growth spurts. If he is doing all the other things that indicate all is normal, (wet nappies etc...)then the behaviour may pass. My boy used to do the cluster feeding after 5pm until he finally dropped off. Hang in there. If you are worried about topping up with formula, try expressing and topping him up with that instead.

I solemly swear that I am up to no good
Sorry no wise words here, only that I know EXACTLY what you're going through. Our 9 week DS did the same thing tonight. Except he interspersed it with large possets (read - chuck).

take my advice...I'm not using it!
If your ds is putting on enough weight, and has plenty of wet nappies, then he is getting enough. I second the expressing idea - even if you feel you're not getting anything, the stimulation may increase your supply. If my two would sleep longer, there is no way I would wake them up (they feed every 2 hours or less).

On the woody woodpecker - yes, my two do this and I also interpret this as hunger, but sometimes it also just signifies general 'unsettled-ness'. They also do the head-bang on my chest!

Why Is A Door AJAR... But AJAR Is Not A Door????
My DD did the same thing at 7 weeks.... Although she is bottle fed she went from 110ml to 150ml.i was concerned i was overfeeding her but when at Health centre appt i was told she was going through a growth spurt... she also become very demanding and squirmy.
she was growing half a cm per week then from week 8-10 she grew 4 cms ( 2 cms per week ) i was told that she would settle back into a feeding pattern and this she has done.. As long as your DD is putting on weight i would not be to concerned myself but ask your health nurse on your next visit

regards

Yep my daughter "woodpeckers" when she is hungry. Sometimes when she is tired she keeps woodpeckering and headbanging even after she has drained both boobies ... in this case I usually put her against my chest and rub her back to settle. If she falls asleep then great, otherwise I put her back on the nipple to get what she can out of it.
