Anyone else studying externally find they are quite shafted???

Some uni's seem to have exceptional off campus programs (my distance ed bach. social work through monash for eg.) but other institutions treat us as an afterthought.

I was only just notified of being accepted in a TAFE course, so most library resources have been taken by on campus students who obviously have already started. I also found when i was external and mixed mode at Deakin, our papers were marked very late etc. after on campus were attended to.

Frustrates me beyond belief!!! Seems unfair and makes it even harder for us, when anyone whose tried both modes will know external study is much more difficult than on site. GRR!!!

I did 95% of my study external via a couple of universities and institutions ... I loved it as I didn't have to attend the campus!

In Sydney during peak hour it often means a 1 to 1.5 hour trip there, not eating dinner, 3 hours lectures, time to get home, have dinner! No thanks I would be rather lazying say down at the park or in the bath reading my notes!

As far as books are concerned I just went and bought what I had to ... I could write all over them then and didn't worry about the length of time I needed them for. If I didn't buy them and I needed research stuff I would just photocopy what I needed from another university ... basically never borrowed a book.

Good luck with your studies!

I'm advanced but not too advanced
External is the only way I know having done my BA and currently a Graduate Diploma all external via UNE in Armidale (NSW). So UNE is also the only uni I know.

I 100% agree - external is the harder way to go as you don't get one to one contact with your lecturers. UNE do offer many courses with an online componant which I'm discovering for the first time this semester - as my previous subjects had no online componant.

As far as library resourses are concerned - I get in really early - find out what books I will need several weeks in advance and order them. UNE also will photocopy for free (within copyright guidelines). I find that you have to be more organised.

I do find that being an external student - the internet is essential. However, having said that when I did my BA, I didn't have any internet access (or know anything about the internet) and used the closest uni library (approx 30 mins away) for research and photocopying.

But now with limited time on my hands, having the uni do my photocopying and looking for books for me is a huge time saver. Most lecturers in their course notes will advise exact page numbers for the information required in books.

Good luck in your studies.

Hi I've never studied externally before, and I only got my course info and confirmation that I was in the course 3 days before my first assignment was due.

Because Im doing everything through email, I emailed my 'lecturer' and asked for a weeks extension since the info I got was obviously after the course started he was fine with that.

I emailed the assignment to him and the next morning I got it back with it marked.

So for me its not too bad.

Hi Kelly... I study internally through RMIT... and I find it's more a case of being a TAFE student. We are more often than not treated like second hand citizens... whenever there is a problem... no one seems to care too much.

We are the last to be advised for exam timetables and also class timetables... not to mention there can be 50 of us crammed in one small classroom while 15 Uni students will get a nice big comfy one.

It can be really frustrating at times... it may just be RMIT but damn! it really annoys me.
