Could someone please explain how reflux is diagnosed and what treatments are available?

I was tempted to try gaviscon but it says not to use it in infants under 1 year. Dear son managed three hour sleep and then did a big feed. Since then its been up every hour feeding which Im sure he is doing to comfort and keep his food down.

He is gurging all the time and swallowing it. He pulls a face often when he does it and crys. I have tried everything else, feeding upright, jacked up the cot at one end, holding him upright after a feed for 15 minutes, burping him for 10 minutes after a feed and now I sleep with him upright on my chest just so he can get some rest.

Some advice please! Im getting awefully sleep deprived and baby is miserable.

cheers

is lost.
Contact a chiropractor. I know they help with Colic so I'd suggest you ring and have a chat. It can't hurt.

The doctor say not to worry unless it bothers the baby. I would suggest it bothers your little man.

DebbieB is a chiropractor she maybe able to help you with recommendations.

I would have a chat with your gp.
Having a reflux baby is tiring and miserable for both you and bubs. If your son seems in pain, IMO its always better to have it checked.

My little girl had reflux as well and our GP put her on infant Gaviscon from about 2 mths. It came in little satchels that we added to her formula & it worked wonders immediately. If I ever forgot to add it to a feed, she would projectile vomit & get really upset. The other thing the GP recommended was to start solids a little bit earlier than we usually would have. I think DD was about 5mths when she started solids & this really helped as well.

I guess regarding how it is diagnosed we were lucky in that our GP is a family friend so actually spent time with DD and saw what we were experiencing. He explained to us that it was caused by the esophagus (sp??) being immature & the valve from the stomach therefore allowed food to come back up.

Hope this is some help.

I read on a packet in the chemist not to give gaviscon before 1 yr of age. So Im off to the gp's today to get help, although I cant get into my regular doc.

Do you give it with every feed? I breastfeed and will be going bacvk to work soon, only got three hours sleep last night and hubby five. I dont think I will cope, I know bubs wants to sleep, he just keeps getting woken up by his spewing, coughing and gagging.

Hi you need to see your GP for a referral to a paediatrician, and then keep a note of pain times, coughs gurgles etc and the hours for colic etc. Jacob was born with reflux but did not start medication till he was 2 months old and vomiting blood and every one kept fobbing me off until I went to another gp and he referred me to a paed that week and he started on Adult Gaviscon 3 mls before every feed (6-8 times a day) adn Zantac syrup but at 10 months his ulcers all opened agian and we have now switched to Lsoc tablet and he is still on Gaviscon, we tried the infant stuff but may as well fed him water, it did nothing for him.

Please dont give any medication until you have seen a specialist and they will tell you the right amounts for your child.

I also limited Jacobs feed at the starts, 10 min either side as the more he feed the more he puked, 10 min meant he still puked but kept the power spewing down to a minimum. Jacob too gurgles and coughs and has red eyes.

I slept with Jacob through the day for 6 months as the only way he could sleep day or night was in the rocker or in a pillow beside me as if he lay down he screamed.

Get help asap and you will see a marked difference in bub. all the best

Sparks...I'm so with you on this one.My first DD was really bad with Reflux. If you aren't BF then u can use an AF formula...it is thicker than Mummy's milk and other formulas.
I had to take my DD of the boob and put her on it as it saved my life.
Their is Infant Gaviscon...ask you gp or pharmacist for some advice and.....do seek alternative therapy's as I never thought of that 8yrs ago, but would def do it with this one if I have the same prob.
Oh....and a Paeditrican is a good idea too....just for you peace of mind.

Love Jen xoxoxoxoxo

Thanks for the replies ladies,

Jen - what is AF formula? Probably a stupid question but I only had 3 hrs sleep!

I had been comping when Dillon had tongue tie - and probably will again when I start work.

What tricks do you ladies use to settle bubs when they wake from regurgiataion? I find it very hard to settle him, pram wont work, patting wont work, I think his little throat is sore from all the spewing and it makes it hard to settle him.

Hi, AR formula is a thickened formula that can help some kids, but for a breast fed baby, adult gaviscon does the same thing, if I was out with Jacob I always took the gaviscon with me and if I accidently forgot the difference in spewing was amazing. But that formula does not work for all kids, Jacob is heaps worse now he is on solids, much more in his tummy and with crawling he just pukes everywhere but it is the silent reflux that is getting him.

I dont know how to offer advice for settling, I still have not figured it out for Jacob, though he is getting better. I used to have him in the sling all the time as he was upright and then I had free hands for my toddlers. Now at 12 months I just hold him.

You have probably been told all this but thought I would check.

Number One, get a dummy, Reflux babies need to suck as it helps their pain and aches in the tummy go away, go and guy one now, it will not interfere with breat feeding at this stage.

Change mat on tilt,

dont lift legs to wipe bum, roll to the side and wipe bum that way.

looser nappies on belly

bed mattress on angel, we used a brick under each leg at one end.

no tummy time till after 4-5 months of age as this just aggravates the reflux. Jacob actually started rolling at 8 weeks of age as he was in so much pain lieing on his tummy.

during breast feeding, burp before feed, half way through breast 1, between sides, half way through breast 2 and afterwards.

Leave sitting in a rocker for at least 1/2 hour after breast feed.

Always have pram at an angle for them.

nappy brain, cant think of the rest but I am sure there is more.

no tight clothes around belly

in your diet, cut out all dairy, spices, and caffeine products, made a huge difference for jacob.

also all you can do for bubs is hug them, and make sure you get out of the house once a week for some R&R it helped me immensly, I went grovery shopping by myself, cleared the head and I could battle the next week.

I know what it's like we went through hell with our baby. Do go to the doctor asap and don't let them fob you off. They think first time mothers don't know anything. Harrison had to be put on Losec...it worked once the dossage was right. Gaviscon can be a problem for babies with silent reflux because it just keeps everything in the throat longer. We tried it and it made Harrison worse. We put an adults reflux wedge from clarke rubber in his cot and then a sling from the Reflux Association was tied in so Harrison was finally able to sleep (and us to). Also a baby swing might be handy but just make sure that your baby isn't hunched at all. I hope this info helps a little. If you need someone to talk to you should phone your local Reflux Association those ladies are great.
