I have just had my second viability scan in two weeks and it's caused me far more stress than reassurance. I have a really bad feeling, and wanted to query whether this scenario sound like a 'failing' embryo not likely to make it?

I had my first scan trying to ascertain exactly when ovulation occurred and although I estimated I was 6 weeks 2 days, I was pushed back to 5 weeks 4 days based on transvaginal sac measurements. A tiny new heartbeat was seen but it was only 89 bpm.

I was asked to come back for another scan. I waited two weeks as requested, and returned this morning. This time I should have been 7 weeks, 3 days, but was today pushed back, based on CRL measurements, another week to 6 weeks, 3 days. Heartrate was only 112 bpm.

I understand cardiac activity is a good sign, but I am very concerned that I keep getting pushed back and that the heartrate doesn't seem strong.

My three previous children all measured exactly to dates and had very high strong heart rates. This lagging baby combined with very mild symptoms has me feeling so helpless.

I am very sorry you're going through this. It is so very hard, being in limbo.

I haven't been in a similar situation (in fact, I was in the opposite - good growth, strong heartbeat, right on for dates, and then miscarried), but I'm sure you'll be able to find stories like yours with happy endings - and the other way around of course.

I wonder whether the scan was done by an experienced technician on a new machine. With such small things to measure, the tiniest of deviations can make a difference. If it was an old machine or someone who usually doesn't do women's ultrasound, you might find that the measurements were off.
