I'm going to Melbourne for the weekend with friends and NO KIDS original.gif original.gif staying on Lygon St for the Friday night then Albert Park for Saturday night.

We're foodies who like a drink (or three) and we love vintage/avant garde clothes and home-wares. I'm not familiar with Melbourne at all, vaguely remember Brunswick St and Smith St in the inner city being pretty cool.

So, where should we go? Any restaurants/cafes/wine bars/shops to recommend?

Gertrude St is the new Brunswick St, which is now full of trustafarians (has been for years).

I hear parts of Sydney Rd are also looking up.

Hidden bars of Melbourne.. ie Manchuria and New Gold Mountain.

Footscray for Asian food.

Williamstown because it is groovy but don't eat by the water, go to Ferguson Street.

Yarraville and Seddon for coffee and the best vintage clothing store ever. Also some good funky shops. There is also a good cocktail bar.

So I'm back and we had a wonderful time. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

We went to Gertrude St Fitzroy, ate at Southpaws and shopped/walked up Smith St then onto the Rose St Artist Markets. I bought a gorgeous reversible "kimono" jacket by a Melb designer original.gif

Then we met our friend at Cookie in the city for a beautiful lunch...afternoon drinks...lovely dinner at Tsindos. Then Ferdydurke for more drinks and music.

Today we went to the Queen Victoria Markets then flew home.

A perfect weekend.
