Hey all,
Hoping someone might be able to shed some light. I am very sure I have the latching correct as my nipples are find and they do not hurt. However, where DS is sucking with his bottom lip is now causing a burning/ rubbing red raw sensation in my areolas. All I've been doing to try and combat this is using lansinoh to lubricate the affected areas before I put him on. We were diagnosed with thrush which I have been treating. I rub daktarin 4 times a day in DS's mouth after a feed which will reduce to 1 time a day in few days. Plus I've been rubbing the daktarin on my nipples after feeds and taking anti fungal medication Nilstat. Not sure if the thrush could have anything to do with the sore areolas but it's only sore where DS's bottom lip attaches. Perhaps he's sucking too hard? He feeds a lot...and well...he gulps most of what he needs in the first 5 mins. Anyone experienced this and is able to give me some advice? Thanks |

Hi there, it might be related to the thrush, could you access a LC to check both you and your baby.
I'm just having a guess but ? if the Daktarin is irritating or drying your areola skin (we are all different) and ? better with a cream based antifungal rather than a gel, you could talk to a Pharmacist about this as there are various antifungal products available. How long has bub had thrush? I think it is often suggested to use the antifungal treatment for 2 weeks after the symptoms subside. Been treating the thrush for almost a week...I was told by the doctor and the LC to use it on the nipples as well. Maybe I will try just the lansinoh and see if that helps. I am dropping into a breastfeeding centre on Wednesday where there are a few LC there. Will have a chat to them. |

Yes lots of women use it on their nipples with no problems, it is commonly suggested but maybe it's not best for you.
