Just wondering if anyone has had the whooping cough vax while pregnant??

My GP has said I can have it after the birth but then I have read of others having it during which apparently can pass some antibodies onto the baby???

Does anyone know or has been given any advice on this? I am due mid July and have a toddler. My toddler is vaxed and DH will get the booster but I am massively paranoid about bub getting it when she is so little.

Any advice would be great.

Yes - my SIL and kids had whooping cough when I was 30 weeks pregnant and I was given an extra shot of whooping cough vaccine as a precaution. My GP called the mothersafe and that was what the reccomended in addition to antibiotics.

I thought it wasn't advised during pregnancy.. But maybe the advice has changed. It was recommended that I get the flu vaccine during pregnancy due to my line of work.

I specifically asked my doctor about this as my sister just had a baby a few weeks ago and the doctor said it is not recommended during pregnancy and you will be given the vaccine in hospital immediately following birth if you are not current.

I did, my GP didn't have a problem doing it as there was a higher risk within the community at the time. There is no advice 'against' doing it, exactly (it's not proven to be dangerous), they just don't have any evidence of it not being dangerous, iykwim?? For what my anecdotal story is worth, my baby was fine.

It's not tested on pregnant women so the risk to the foetus is largely unknown, the recommendation is to give it if direct exposure has occurred, but if possible avoid until after birth.

Ok thanks guys. I am just very paranoid after reading lately that a lady lost her baby after she got whooping cough just prior to giving birth. She had hardly any symptoms at the birth and had the vaccine shortly after birth but it was too late. She had passed it on and her baby died a few weeks later. With the epidemics around lately it really scares me.

My ob has advised me to have it at 30 weeks, I had the booster 4 years ago.
Still have to research it some more, but that's what he's advising.

It was recommended to me, I've decided to wait until after my twins are born though because I have asked asked nurses, several doctors and mid wives at the hospital what the side affects are and nobody has told me. It's a public hospital so I see someone different every time.

This is where I get confused. I know people that get told to wait, like I have but then others that are recommended to recieve it.
I think I will ask for a few opinions. Is there anywhere you can ring to find out about these things and the current guidelines?
