> Prenatal vitamins - unusual question

So we are back TTC #2 so I am on my prenatal vitamins. Elevit has once again made me constipated because of the high iron so I am looking at other options. Swisse have one with low iron and high folic acid but they are huge so of course I choked on the first one. I am wondering if it would work to mix up some biscuit dough, cut the tablets open and mix each tablet contents into 1 biscuit then bake them....would they still contain the nutrient values or would cooking them change it? I know it's a bizarre question, just wanted to hear some thoughts.

OP I have no idea if the nutrient value would stay the same but I like your thinking with the cookies, a bit of a spin on the hash cookie!! biggrin.gif

I think if you are going to go to the effort of cooking something special, cook something special with high iron and folate ingredients.

I like your thinking OP!
However, like most nutrient rich foods, I would think the best parts would be destroyed, or somewhat lessened in their nutrient value, if cooked at high heat.

What about open it up and mix it with a tbs chocolate syrup and quickly swallow it down. I do that with DD's antibiotics when she needs them.

I don't think baking is the way to go. Unless you have a poor diet then you probably get most of the important vitamins via your usual food intake. The exception is folate which many women don't consume the recommended amount of. So perhaps look at getting the supplements you need as separate tablets. The individual folate ones are quite small.

If you can cut it, why not just cut it to smaller sizes?

I suspect the heat from the oven wouldn't have a desireable effect on the composition.

Baking will destroy the nutrient content of the vitamins.

Just out of curiosity - why are you taking high level folate? Did your Dr recommend it?
The guidelines are 400 ug/day unless you have type 1 diabetes or previous birth with NTD.

I haven't got a look round all the supplements in Australia yet but surely you can get a liquid formulation?

About the iron - if you are taking anything with additional iron you are going to need lots more fibre- unless your GP says you are deficient i would stay clear

I have no idea about the baking question, but folate levels so important I wouldn't risk it. I think Elevit is a massive rip off though and multivitamins invariably make me nauseous, so When I was TTC I took a folate only supplement & got my iron & vit D levels checked. Since the time I was pregnant, they've added iodine to the list of things you should ensure you're getting enough of, so that would be something else to consider I guess.
