Another should I go question ?

My mum turns 60 this year and at Xmas they asked me if I wanted to go to Phuket or Fiji with them to celebrate. I told them I couldn't afford it as I just booked a cruise leaving in April and needed to pay that off and save spending money etc... I felt really bad cause mum came to Fiji with me and my kids to celebrate my 40th last year. So I have been seriously thinking about going as a surprise but not telling her..I have enough frequent flyer points to pay for the flights. It will just be the accommodation and spending money. I only plan to go for 10 days (normally we would spend 2-3 weeks in Thailand normally) only thing stopping me from booking it is the kids missing school (again for a holiday) Our cruise is in April just after Easter so they will miss 9 days there if I pull them out to go to Phuket thats another 8-9 days only maybe 7 weeks later. We were planning to go Phuket next year...as we went last year with my sister. So Wdyt ?? Kids are in year 5 and kindy.

For me life experience trumps school any time. If it was that important that every child MUST be in school, then there would be no such thing as homeschooling (who use life experiences as part of their curriculum work). The Yr 5 child will have finished Naplan by then and I would just ask the teacher to set some work for them to do while you are away and I would probably get one of those activity books for the Kindy kid so they can keep up with their writing etc etc. I know that this opinion is not always the most popular one on EB though

I'm another who absolutely believes life experiences trumps classroom education any day! And I don't think a few weeks in total of missed school over the course of the year is really going to be that important.

We are currently on a three week holiday atm. The girl's teachers set them work to do whilst away. In fact they are getting more done here on a daily basis than what they do in an ordinary classroom. In fact DD1's work is going to put her ahead of her class by the time she goes back. I do agree life experiences do trump classroom time.

I say book it the joy you and your extended family wwill get and life experiences makes it all worth it. We would absolutely go.
