My upcoming elective CS is booked for 1.30pm. I was aware that I would be required to fast beforehand, bit of a bummer but I think I will be too excited and nervous to eat anyway! I was speaking to my MW today who explained that being an afternoon CS I may be permitted to have a light breakfast around 6am, but after that no food or water.
I drink about 3L of water a day! I rarely go more than 15 minutes without a drink or I feel sick and get terrible headaches. I have low blood pressure so I need to keep my fluids up. I know every hospital is different, but has anyone been in this position and been forced to go without water for so many hours? Or were your health carers sympathetic? I've been told there is the possibility of being hooked up to the IV early if I'm having difficulty, but I'm really panicked by this latest revelation. |

In January I had a missed miscarriage and decided to have a d & C so my last drink was before bed at around 10pm and then I didn't have my D & C until 9:30pm the next night, apparently there were alot of emergency cs etc that day. I must admit I went a bit crazy through frustration/hunger/thirst at about 5:30pm that night and this is when they quickly hooked me up to IV fluids which made me feel better very quickly. I was a bit silly and didn't say anything until I was past that point iykwim so I would definitely recommend you have the IV fluids if you are feeling very thirsty and not so well. |

They should be able to give you iV fluids. I had to have water with my meds anyway before my cs and when I said I needed more they gave me IV. Just explain the situation, they'll fix it for you.

The reason for no water is if you need a general, the intubation (to keep you breathing) can cause vomiting. If you have anything in your stomach and vomit it up, it could block that. Even though it is a CS, it is for the worst case scenario.
I would either ask for a morning CS, or to have your notes ask for the IV as soon as you are admitted. |

I'm the same, I asked my Obs for a morning c-sec. Had to be at the hospital at 6am so not much time to feel thirsty/headachey etc.

Thanks for your replies
I understand why they say no water, I just can't comprehend the 'how' I'm going to manage it! Unfortunately the morning CS is not an option (already checked), but I will make sure I mention my wish to have the IV asap at my next appt and have them write it in the notes, thanks for the suggestion. Miss Shelby, you poor thing, I would have lost my mind |

I'm on the "emergency" list for a c-section on Tuesday. Like you I can have a light breakfast and then nothing (including water) from 6am. My problem is that technically I am having an elective, so I have to wait around all day and see if I get a spot. There's a chance I may fast all day and not even get the c-section that day if they have a ton of emergencies! Wishing I'd just booked an elective earlier to be honest.

duck- oh- la try to keep your mouth moist by crunching in ice chips, it does help to make you feel as though you are drinking.
You will not dehydrate in that time frame so an early IV probably won't help you feel any better but a wet mouth sure will. When you have your light breakfast try and stretch it out finishing with a lovely long drink of water. As long as there is about 6 hours between drink and theatre you should be fine. Lots of good luck, how exciting for you |

Try keeping a 5yo without food or water from 7am for 2.30pm plus operation.
