We are at a crossroads, financially. We need to buy a bigger house as we are bursting out of our current one. I would like to seek financial advice but don't know what to look for. I know some Financial advisers are really out to sell financial products so advice can be skewed. How do I find a financial adviser who will look at our income/investments and give us our best options in terms of buying a new house and what we can actually afford as compared to what the banks say we can afford?

Do you think the banks are over or underestimating what you can afford?

A good mortgage broker would be able to give you more options than any one bank can. Our financial planner didn't charge us for our first consultation, only if we took up any of the options that he provided, which had nothing to do with property.

A financial planner won't be wanting to talk about houses as that's not how they make money. As PP, mortgage broker or maybe your accountant can help though basically it seems like you need to establish a budget,

I just read your post out to my husband who is a senior financial planner with a non-bank firm. He says you're looking for a mortgage broker. A FP can help you strategise to be able to afford a bigger house in 5-10 years, but if your move is imminent you need a good mortgage broker, ideally one with an accountancy background
