I haven't chosen a hospital yet, but my doctor wants me to try to decide.

I don't have private health care, so I'm going with a public hospital.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to which hospital I should use?
Thanks rolleyes.gif

Ignorance is not a point of view.
Depending where you are located, you may find you don't have much of a choice, as most public hospitals have catchment areas.

Unless you are high risk (in which case you may be able to get referred to Mater Mothers Public) I would think you just have to go to the one that is for your area.

Most Hospitals have pretty strict catchment areas so you may not be able to simply choose one. The Mater Public (South Brisbane) for example, does not take anyone outside of the catchment and I think the RBWH is the same. At the end of the day you want somewhere where you can get to in a hurry wink.gif so check out which are your closest hospitals and talk to them about catchment areas.

No personal experience here, but a friend just gave birth at RBWH (through the birth centre) and had a fantastic experience. And, although it probably has nothing to do with what their maternity services are like, I had a really good experience with their ED and orthopaedics.

I would have said Mater Mothers. My second wasn't born there but I was flown there and spent a week in after I had him. It was awesome.

For my third I spent a week and a half in before he was born which was great. After the birth though I got kicked out way too early. I was turfed out after 4 nights but 3 of those 4 nights I was in the ICU really sick. I was only 1 night on the ward and told them I wasn't ready to go home and pleaded to stay but they said no. 4 hours after I got 'home' (to where I was staying - I don't live in Brisbane) DH took me to the doctors because I was so unwell and they told me I should have been in hospital.

Anyway... sorry went off one one a bit there. I had a bad experience in a really fantastic hospital. They are probably the best hospital. I don't think you can get in unless you are high risk or in the catchment like PP said though.

I think you can go into a draw or something to go to the birth centre? I'm not sure how it works, and if it is available for women out of the catchment area, but I have heard something about a ballot system or something. It might be something you want to look into OP if that sort of thing (birth centres) interests you.
