Proud mummy of 2 gorgeous boys with a surprise bundle on the way
Why is it that in todays society is comes across as being rude to ask ones age and if asked why is the response something along the lines of "i prefer not to say"??

Why be ashamed of your age......

I've never been ashamed of my age - I quite happily joke that I am the old lady of most groups I am a part of, especially mothers of children the same ages as mine because I am considered an older Mum to my nearly 12yo and an absolute dinosaur Mum to my 13mo!

I get on with people of all ages and to be honest, i don't look at someone and try to guess how old they are before I decide that I may or may not get on with them - I talk to them, get to know them and then decide!

btw ... for those who are curious, it is common knowledge that I am 43. Not so common knowledge that my gorgeous DH is 35 wink.gif

I think, however, that it has been a long standing taboo to ask another person's age. I certainly remember being told not to be so rude when asking a friend of my mother's how old she was when I was a child. One of my grandmothers never disclosed her age and my grandfather certainly didn't. When he married for the second time, it wasn't until his new wife signed the marriage certificate that she found out that he was in actual fact, 17 years older than her. She had just assumed, because he was so fit and healthy that they were around the same age.

The only people I know who hide their age are pretentious snobby ladies of 40+ and everyone knows they're lying anyway. One particular lady my DH used to work for swears she is still 38 (for the past 10 years). laughing2.gif Whatever makes you sleep better.

If anyone were to ask my age I would tell them. I am conscious of being an older mother this time round tho, when I had my first daughter I was 21. I turn 46 this year and I guess it would depend on the context that I was asked my age. If someone were to say something like, "Wow you remember THAT event!, How old ARE you?" I wouldn't like to say my age but if it were something like "You look waaaay too young to have a 24 year old, how old are you?" then I wouldn't mind saying lol wink.gif biggrin.gif

The most hilarious 'age' thing I've ever had was back when I was a high school teacher.
It was my birthday, and one of the students asked:

"How old are you Miss Countrymel?"

When I replied he went:

"Wow! Most older ladies won't tell you their age!"

I was twenty two!

26 here.

Ages are annoying. They keep changing on me. Not like birthdays and anniversaries, they stay the same year in year out. I have enough trouble remembering the numbers that stay the same all the time, why do people expect me to remember how old I am!

I'm 27 and not ashamed of my age we all grow older. I take good care of myself and look a lot younger than what I am. I got asked recently why I got married and am onto baby number three so young. When I asked how old this lady thought I was she said 21/22 made my day biggrin.gif

Same, I spent most of my 30s having to do quick calculations to work out my age because I kept forgetting. Now that I am 40 I get to start again.

I don't have an issue disclosing my age, but now I am suddenly worried that I am going to start looking it. I see women that are only a few years older than I am looking old, sunspots, wrinkles and generally time worn, and I don't want to look like that.
