I don't know if I've posted in the right section (if I haven't please move) but I would like to advice ASAP...

I was informed today by lovely DH that the fish fillets (called skate) I bought at the fish monger this morning is actually sting ray fillets

DH said he will eat them and has eaten them before and said they wer nice....me, well I mght try a bit out of curiousity and the kids well umm i think I wont give it to them.

Has anyone eaten skate before and was it ok ? Also is it safe for the kids to eat ?

Ever heard of flake (at the fish & ship shop) - same thing...

Most people would have whether they realise it or not.

I don't understand why you would think it is unsafe. A stingray is just a type of fish that is a funny shape.

You'd be very hard pressed to find a fish n' chip shop who used gummy these days as flake. If you ordered Gummy shark you will get gummy shark. If you order flake you will most likely get school shark, or slate or even ray. Which is why I tend to not order flake when I am at a fish n' chip shop I tend to only buy/eat/order fish that we (as in DH, myself etc) would actually catch. We wouldn't waste our time catching and eating a ray, just like we wouldn't waste our time catching and eating a blue shark (though plenty of people do) I would waste my time (and DH just spent the whole weekend wasting his time) catching yummy mako though. (But I admit I am a fish snob, who is used to eating very good quality fish and not having to pay a price for it.)

Stingrays / skate are not protected or 'no catch' species in Australia. In my honest opinon not the best eating fish to put on the table but they are not poisonous, otherwise the fish monger wouldn't be seeling the fillets in the first place.
