Hi everyone.

I woke up feeling weak and cruddy this morning and started getting a bit of nausea. I've had a bit of nausea on and off for the past three weeks or so. Then I started vomiting. I never really felt sick or vomited with my pregnancy with DS, so at first I assumed it was a bit of morning sickness, but now, six hours and four vomits later I'm worried I have gastro.

Is there any way other than just time passing that can tell me if I have gastro?

Is gastro dangerous to the pregnancy at this stage?

Should I go to a dr?

Thanks. I just feel so hideous.

I had gastro at about 30 weeks. It was hideous. Fortunately the vomiting only lasted 12 hours and after about 14 hours I was able to keep down some fluids and toast. I did make a GP appointment, and I think it is probably wise. She told me the biggest dangers were dehydration - so really make an effort to try to keep down some fluid and get someone to bring you in some rehydration stuff (gastrolite or whatever) and that sometimes later in pregnancy all the bowel activity can trigger prematrue labour. That didn't happen to me fortunately. There is not really much else the doc can do.

Keep up the fluids (food is not required at this point, but liquid is). Take really small sips or suck ice cubes. Gastrolyte/hydrolyte any of those will be easier to keep down, even diluted flat lemonade or clear juice.

If you feel dehydrated, or if you are sick for more than 24 hours, see a doctor.

I ended up with gastro around 10-11 weeks pregnant. Couldn't keep any fluids down. I went down hill really fast and after speaking to my sister (RN emergency) headed off to hospital. I don't know if was the fact that I was pregnant or the name dropping but I was seen immediately (had high temp and threw up the panadol I was given) and given 2 bags of fluids. After them I felt 100% better and headed home.

If you're concerned seek help from your health care professional..

I had Campylobacter (food posioning usually from chicken) when I was 5 weeks pregnant. I was sick for a week. I was told by the young dr I saw to ring the Womens and Childrens Hospital to see what they thought (Infectious Diseases). They said I should be fine. I guess the main thing is to make sure you are hydrated.

You need to see a doc to rule out a urinary tract infection, if you have just vomiting and no diarrhoea. Take it easy, hope you feel better soon.

Goodness this sounds like me! I had the same food poisoning before I knew I was pregnant like a week after ovulation. I saw a GP to do a stool test and because we were ttc I said I could be pregnant and wanted some advice. Go see a GP, its true that its mainly dehydration but there are also some medications you can't take at certain trimesters. For example at the time I was advised to take immodium for 24 hours only as the GP would rather I get better asap but that didn't work so I then took lomotil but you can only take that in first trimester.
Gastro is different to food poisoning though so seek medical advice to be sure.

Edit to add: get better soon!

I had terrible gastro at about 6 weeks pregnant with DD. When DH and then the boys came down with it, knowing it was gastro and not morning sickness got me through it!

I got gastro at about 14 weeks and it was TERRIBLE. It lasted for about 8 days and completely knocked me on my a$$.

I ended up in hospital for dehydration, and did a stool test because I was concerned it could have been something more serious like food poisoning as it was just lasting for so long, the doctors at the women's hospital explained that it's harder to shake because your immune system is low while pregnant, so don't be concerned if you can't get over it as quickly as usual.

Hope you're feeling better soon
