Hi,
I have taken Metformin for PCOS (don’t have diabetes) during my previous pregnancy.
After 12 weeks weaned myself off as advised by Hospital consultant.
I had no problems with it and don’t think I would have got pregnant without it.
Baby was good size.

Stupidly decided I did not need Metformin and had two miscarriages( 8,11wks)
TTC for ages without any luck.

So went back on Metformin again and got pregnant and this time had no problems.
I am now 24weeks pregnant and baby is healthy and fine. Only just weaned myself off Metformin.

Most people stay on it until 12 weeks, due to some info pointing to it helping stop miscarriage risk.
This certainly has been the case with this pregnancy.

But have heard of women staying on it for the whole pregnancy without issues. My fears about previous MC made me stay on it longer.

Good Luck

PS,
You shouldnt just stop dose but wean off slowly.

I haven't been lucky enough to stay pregnant yet but if I do my endocrinologist has recommended staying on metformin until 12 weeks when he want me to have a GTT. If the results of the GTT are good I can come off the metformin and if not then we look at treatment.

I took metformin during the first trimester of each pregnancy.

I went on it because some studies show a reduction in miscarriage (older mum). My endocrinologist thought that there was not enough studies to prove this but was happy for me to stay on it just in case.

I took metformin for my entire pregnancy. I was/am on 2000 mg per day. I had no side effects from it, and it also helped me with my gestational diabetes. There is some research that shows metformin especially in the first 12 weeks can reduce the rate of miscarriage in some woman.
