Hi all, Im stuck with what to do now, so am hoping to get some suggestions.
My bub was breastfed until 4.5 months and stopped because of allergy/intolerances to things in my breast milk. I was on the elimination diet with improvement but still some symptoms in my son. He had eczema and bumpy red rashes on his body and diahorrea (and mucous earilier on until i removed dairy). He has been great on hypo allergenic formula. We began introducing solids just after 4 months when he got better with me being on the elimination diet (however he still did have some symptoms). Started with sweet potato - on day 2 rash came up over his body, bumpy red rash which turned dry. i removed it and by the second day of no sweet potato his skin was back to normal Banana - success! no symptoms Pumpkin - exactly the same rash and timing of rash as sweet potato potato - rash after 3 days, the rash did not come on as red and fast as with sweet potato or pumpkin. but I could not get rid of the rash even with steriod creams. removed potato and still treated the skin with steriod cream and it went away. Pear- same rash and timing of rash as potato. I wasnt convinced that potato or pear were necessarily related to food so i rechallanged the pear and exactly the same thing has happened. We have been to an allergist. My son was negative for everything at 3.5 months. I have a follow up appointment in a month and a half but im not sure what to do in the mean time. I feel so upset as he loves his food and stares us down so much when we eat in front of him and all i can give him is banana. Has anyone else had a similar experience? What worked/didnt work for them? I think I am just going to keep trying foods but its so hard having this reaction every time and then having to apply steriod cream over large areas of his body. Thanks |

Can you bring forward the allergist appointment? Have yoseen a Paediatrician? Thy might be able to help as well.
In the meantime I'd not offer any solids, sorry. I know that's hard but, till you've a better idea what's going on I think that would be best. |

try rice! perhaps some protein like chicken or beef. ring the immunologist (hope you are seeing someone who is an immunologist as well as an allergist) and ask to take a cancellation appointment!

My ds is 6.5 months and started solids just after 4 months. He has had similar issues with raised skin rashes but only on his face not the rest of his body. I first noticed it after introducing apples but he gets it after all sorts of food. I havent seen anyone about it yet (am going to talk to the doc this week about it when he goes for his 6mth immunisations.
I decided to just keep going with the solids and see what happened and his skin actually does seem to be coping better now with only mild rashes and he eats all sorts now: vegies, fruit, toast, weetbix with cows milk, chicken, cheese, yoghurt etc Hopefully your bub will be the same as mine and cope better with the solids given time, but your case is obviously quite different/worse than my sons so definately seek some professional advice. |

Thanks for the quick replies! The allergist we see is a paediatrician allergist, and is very experienced with all this. I do hope I can get an appointment ASAP. I just don't know what to do in the mean time. However I'm starting to doubt I'd get answers from the allergist anyways. Allergy testing in a 5 month old is unreliable and given it takes until day 3 of having the food to get a rash make me think its a non lge allergy so that won't show up on any test.
i was hoping he would get used to food and his rashes would go down but it's been nearly 2 months of trying foods with no changes. It just seems very weird that he's had this rash to everything but banana. I'm just hoping that things will improve! |

My DS is allergic to dairy, soy and peanuts (confirmed by blood test). And it appears that he may also be intolerant to salicylates, so we're both on a very restricted diet at the moment, as I'm still breast-feeding. His eczema still flares up at times, but his face would flare up really red and angry at the end of each day, and settle down again overnight, which has stopped. The only fruit he can have at the moment is pear, he doesn't like bananas, and only tinned pear at that, which has to be in syrup because the juice contains salicylates. I haven't been able to try fresh pear, as it needs to be very ripe and thickly peeled, and at the moment pears start going off before they get ripe enough to give him! Potatoes also need to be old, and thickly peeled to get them low salicylate, maybe it could be something like that? I'm clutching at straws (and speaking from my own experience), also agree with PP's about holding off on any further introduction of solids until you can see someone.
If you do decide to try rice, I'd get ground rice from the flour aisle to make rice porridge with, rather than using one of the baby cereals, just because of what else they can contain which he might react to. |

Hi.
My 2 yr still has no safe foods and is ok on just hyperallergenic formula. I would just keep your child on the formula until your next appointment. My 2yr old has formula alone and has for sometime and her weight is ok. The only time my 2yr old has food is food trials in Hospital. Hope you get some answers |
