I was given the honour of being made the "guardian" of my best friend's DD at her naming ceremony when she was a baby. If it were a religious ceremony she would be my god daughter. It wasn't a religious ceremony so she is my........????

We use "fairy godmother" and "fairy godson/goddaughter".

Our friends use "earth mother" etc.

That's what I thought! On the certificate it named me as her "guardian". And I was hoping there would be term for the reciprocal relationship. I take it seriously, I try to make our relationship more special than just any "friend's daughter" but oh well.

Do they expect you to be her guardian if something happened to the parents?

When she's little, I don't see anything wrong with being the fairy godmother.

It has significance to us, and it works perfectly. Besides, the benefit of creating your own title/name is that it only has to be meaningful to the people involved.
