I have just set up international roaming on my iPhone for a trip soon. I bought a data pack so I can use the internet on my phone a little whilel I am over there. It is charge at $15.36 per MB!!! It is 75c per text message. Will I be able to send iMessages to my friends using the data or will I be charged at the 75c per message rate?

iMessage is an internet msg service like MSN but on the iphone. You will be charged for data not an SMS. TBH I would just turn off data and turn on wifi. Most starbucks and macdonald's overseas have free wifi and easily accessable. I'm going to London & New York in November, I purchased an international sim card from woollies that you use your current mobile number (you link them) and it is much cheaper. I would have a look at international sim cards over doing international roaming.

My DD iMessages and I notice on her account they show up as 1MB.

Be careful though I got caught out on the the roaming and was charged for that alone without even using my phone - in 1 day I was charged about $500.

CC. Where are you going? The costs for Telstra international roaming are insane. And they don't warn you when you go over your pack!

When we went to the US last year I bought 2 SIMs on the internet and popped them in the phone at the airport while we waited to board. When we stepped off on the other end, they were ready to go. Cost me $40 each including data and from memory and I didn't have to top up once in three weeks.

Check which carrier works best in the area you are travelling in too. We had a t-mobile and an AT&T (one in each phone). Just in case. AT&T worked great on the East Coast, but T-mobile had better coverage on the West Coast

I am going to Thailand. Wont my phone be locked to Telstra though? I think it's a 2 or 3 year contract and I have only had the phone for just over a year.

I was about to say almost exactly the same as Coffeegirl. Cost me about $90 all up for 2 phones in the US.

We went to Thailand last year& again bought local SIM cards from travel gear. com. I then went to a big phone place in the basement of JungCeylon in Phuket & bought credit. Worked beautifully for both phones & our iPad.

Stuff Telstra & their global roaming I didn't want to come home with a debt of thousands of $.

Sorry to hijack but how do u know what sims will work in thailand?
Can I use my same number and is it a micro sim for iphone?
We leave for chiang Mai in 10 weeks and I haven't really thought about our phones and what to do!

Telstra don't lock the iphones anymore. You just need to ring and ask them to unlock the phone. Takes about 48 hours to process.

When you order your sim from the internet, make sure you order a precut micro Sim if you have an iphone 4 or 5.


Sarahs_three. If you use a reputable sim seller on line like travelgear, they have guarantees. Don't buy off ebay as they can be dodgy. You can't use your same number, but if you order ahead of time and set it up, then you can give your new number to family for emergencies.

I second the idea of buying a SIM locally, but make sure your phone is unlocked before you go - you need to call Telstra to do this then (I think) reset it by connecting to your omputer.
