We had a boarder drive our van. He got a parking ticket, fessed up, assured us he'd paid it and we didn't think anything of it. He has since left, and we've got the fine in the mail!! So angry - of course he didn't leave a forwarding address and is not answering phone calls or emails to give us a forwarding address. Now it turns out that without a forwarding address they can't process the stat dec saying that it wasn't me driving. So I have to pay the fine. Email and phone contacts aren't enough. Is this advice correct? Aside from going to court to explain it all, or just picking a fake address out of the air for the guy and sending it back (thus lying on a stat dec which is not what I want to do!!). It's only $99 but I'm just annoyed.

I'd be p!ssed too, but i'd probably just chalk it up to life experience and pay it.

I once got a parking ticket in my sisters car, and instead of fessing up sent a cheque in the same day. It got to the processing desk before the parking officers copy did, so got put aside and didn't get processed. So my sister got the reminder, and I had to chase it up from another state.
A long shot, but maybe you need to double check with the processing department.

Someone has to pay it. They're not very forgiving or understanding.

That's a complete pain in the rear, but unfortunately I think your only option is to pay it.
If you have contact details for him, then I'd be chasing him for the money if you can, or just write it off with a great bit grumble.

In the real world you shouldn't have to do this, but you don't want to end up with an unpaid fine in your name, that will just lead to trouble in the long term.
