DD1 has some maths homework and I'm struggling for examples.

She needs to come up with 2 real life examples of "things" or collections that are approximately that amount. For example, if the number is 100,000 a real life example could be "around the number of people that would fit in the MCG".

The numbers are 100, 1000, 10,000 and 1,000,000.

I suggested that she 1,000,000 is the number of excuses she has for getting out of doing something but she was not impressed So far we have 10,000 metres is roughly the distance from home to school and approximately 100 dalmations in the story book.

We have thought of things such as building heights of tall buildings she has been to but nothing is close enough to one of the numbers.

Everything else is a mental blank.

Any suggestions?

The population of Adelaide is approximately 1 million (closer to 1.2, but that is probably good enough).
You could say her Dad has approximately 1000 song on his i-pod (who is to know if that is true?!), or the school/your block is approximately 1000m around it's perimeter (could check on googlempas).
How many kids at the school - if ~500 you could say there are approximately 1000 shoes in the school on a school day etc.
100 - approximately 100 spoonfuls of honey in a 1litre jar.

10,000 - do you know a town with that number of people. The town I grew up was about that size.

1,000 - how many kids in her school?

100 - how many kids in her year?

1 million the approximate amount of people that are in Times Sqaure on New Years Eve at midnight

100 - about the number of shoes worn by Year 4 students and their teachers at her school and 100 steps from our garage to the letter box.

1000 - approx. kms from Melbourne to Sydney and 1/2 the length of the local rowing course (there was a large rowing regatta on the weekend)

10,000 - metres from home to school and the approx. circumference of the moon in kms

1,000,000 - approx. population of Adelaide and approx. number of steps it would take to walk from home to Adelaide (this one took a bit of working out based on average stride length and lots of calculations).
