Ok so I went for a job back in NOV for medical Reception - I did not get the job BUT apparently I was at the TOP of their list for the next round....

anyway now its FEB - a friend of mine works in the office where I am trying to get in - she told me they had an opening and to email HR - so i did - so time ticks on

Now i have another MEETING tomorrow with the manager of one of the offices - and my friend told me UPFRONT the reason why I didn't get the job is that i was so nervous in the interview the first time. Last time it was a panel of 3 ( i didnt know until i walked into the room) thus was unnerved!! and it was my first interview (proper one) for about 10 years!

anyway - help me settle my nerves - this is more a Meeting to see if i would FIT with the team...


I guess I had to type it out to get it out of my system - i hope i sleep tonight - I am NOT a nervous person - BUT have NEVER worked Medical - but have years of customer service (travel agent) and am swapping career paths so i would really LOVE this job....

Relax, remember to breath & stick to your strengths.

Try an relate all of your answers back to the experience you do have & how its relevant to this role, also that you are keen to learn & quick on the uptake!

Be yourself is always my best advice and don't be afraid to ask questions - just not about $ etc at this stage. Be sure they know that you know whats involved in the role and that you're flexible etc.

My best interviews have been where I've let down my guard a tad and had a bit of fun just chatting (read the situation though; not all bosses want to go down this track during an interview)

Also it is ok to not know the answer to something, but make sure you can say how you could find the answer. ie look in policy/procedure manuals.

If you are planning to do any study to support this career change mention it.

Being a medical receptionist is a lot about customer service, so sell this as a strength that you have and your experience of dealing with a range of people and strong communication skills.

Pre prepare with questions you may be asked, my pet hate question is name one of your weaknesses, so I always have an answer ready for that one. If you are asked that make sure you can turn it around to be a positive. Forbecample I usually say mine is lack of confidence, but know that this means I always give 100% to make sure I am doing a good job. Therefore negative becomes a positive.

I think it helps to put it in perspective. Realise that although you would love the job it is not the end of the world or your life if you don't get it.

Think to yourself - what is the worst thing that can happen...(you don't get the job). Is it life-threatening, will the world end...no...you will just pick yourself up, brush yourself off and life will keep going.

Don't let the fear (or nerves) control you and you will be fine.

Yep will upsell my Customer service - i have loads of experiences dealing with all walks of life..

Yep - negative can be as I am trying something different I am less confident about it - but willing to give it a go and give it my all....

It sucks these days to get a job its about WHO you know!!!!!

Looks like everyone has given you some great advice.

The only extra I can think of is that if you need to take a few moments to think about the question straight away and the whole question. Dont be afraid to ask them to repeat the question if you need it or just to give you time to think of an answer.

Also behavioral based questioning is strong in the industry so if you can think of a way to answer with an example that is great as it gives them an idea of your past behaviours and what you would do in the future.

Do research on the company and drop that in to the conversation but dont over kill. Maby refer to their values and how you believe they describe you or something like that.

Also as others have said practice answers to the difficult questions such as describe your weakness, why work for us (maby mention values? I hate the answers most candidates give me of I think its a safe job or close to home! It amby is but there is more to the role!!) and what would you bring to xyz organisation.

Remember to make strong eye contact and not to just the person asking the question. Think strong and relaxed and this will come across when you interview!

Congratulations!

I had a job interview lined up for yesterday (Friday), but nerves got the better of me and I cancelled.

Its very good of the organisation; they've offered me another interview time on Monday, so I will be spending the rest of this weekend psyching myself up to go.
