We live in the apartment block, on the second floor.
Right beneath of our 2nd bedroom (nursery), and our 2nd bathroom is our neighbors garage.
We love having a window open, especially on a nice day. To be honest sometimes we hardly ever close that window only on super hot and cold days.
Our neighbor (very nice family) drives this super old car, and the problem with the car is the horrible fumes that come out of it. Because it is an old car, it takes 10 min or so every day to start it up, and all those fumes go right inside our apartment! He drives his car to work every day. So every morning and evening we get some not so fresh air inside of our apartment. During weekends, its even worse, as they seem to come and go every 5 - 6 hours.
We tried talking to him about the problem, and he was super surprised to hear about it, apparently we are the only ones that complained about the smell coming out of his car.
I should probably mention that they have 2 cars and one garage, the smelly car is always outside and we have hardly seen him park the car inside.
I understand that ITS OUR choice to keep windows open during summer, spring and autumn, but would like to see if anyone has other ideas, and if there is anything we could try doing?
We secretly hope that one day his car will die, but we have been living here for almost 2 years and the car seems to keep going!

I hate to be so blunt but if it bothers you so much you're probably going to have to suck it up OR just open the window a little while after he leaves in the morning... if it's a regular time you will know to shut it before the car starts up and then yeah, 10 mins later open it again. Annoying, yes, but he's hardly going to sell his car to satisfy your needs with something that could easily be prevented by you shutting your window!!

I don't think you can expect them to do much about it.

I think you'll just have to close the window when he starts the car up.

Can you swap car spaces so their car is parked elsewhere?

Maybe even say just due to noise waking bub?

I would keep the window shut unless you know they are out. We had a similar problem with a neighbours car (the block next to us) and there is not much they could do.

Other than sell their car.

You know its funny, not so long ago there was a thread from someone living in a unit and left their windows open a couple of times during the really hot days of summer & thru bring baby upset a neighbour & everyone said its her responsibility to think of her neighbours and keep the window closed at all times, but now this poster its bring told to suck it up.

I think personally in units you need to be respectful of your neighbours so in this instance it would be more neighbourly if they garaged the stinky car & parked the other one under your window. Maybe try bringing it up with them again?

That's what I was going to ask? I thought there were laws about car emmissions and what is reasonable.
