Not news you expect to see!

http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/11/world/europe....html?hpt=hp_t1

Will be interesting to see the speculation on the "why" (as I'm sure some people will not believe it's due to "advanced age").

Wow! He'll be the first in nearly 600 years to see the smoke..... As to why? Getting in first before someone bumped him off?

So the end of the world is nigh?

Some prophet (who is apparently spot on with a lot of things) predicted there would only be two further popes after John Paul II

Well I hope he doesn't expect a pension! Fancy retiring, we should all work until we die according to some.

Of course without being privy to whatever pressures may be at play within the Church, if he has chosen to go simply because of advanced age and that he feels he can't effectively do the job, then I think that is admirable.

After just reading the OP i said exactly the same thing as you did, to DH. I remember reading about a prophet and something about the pope fleeing the Vatican because of controversy

The END IS NIGH. dev (6).gif

I agree with that, if he is in fact worried that he can't perform his role properly.

However, since Popes tend to "retire to the Pearly Gates," I can't help but wonder if there is something more in play here.

I have read more pope jokes in the last 2 mins then I've read all year,

brace yourselves.

I believe he has cited advanced age. Its better then losing your faculties on the job.

Anyone else waiting for Queen Elizabeth to step down? Now might be the time.

I thought he had been publicly noted as suffering symptoms of old age ...so you really think it is some sort of conspiracy?
