It's DS1's 2nd birthday soon and I want to make him a '2' cake. (DUH!) wink.gif

I'm not the most adventurous cook and I should probably say not particularly patient nor creative so I want to do something reasonably simple but effective and cute... Thinking most likely a car design or something else typically boyish if it will be easier.

Anybody out there have a recipe and/or a simple design I could copy please???

Or I might even end up going the cheat's method and buy one if time is not my friend leading up to the day... Is there anyone preferrably NOR in Perth that can tell me of a cheap and good cake maker that could do it for us without it costing an arm and a leg?

You can also Hire number shaped cake tins from cake shops.

As far as making the cake, white wings packet cakes would be my recommendation - although when using any packet cake important step - SIFT THE MIX when you put it into the bowl.

It makes a huge difference honestly.

Good cakes aren't cheap.
You'd be better off baking up a few packet mixes and then with a paper template you can easily carve the number 2. Decorate with butter cream, it's more forgiving and cheaper than fondant. Google Images and Pinterest are great for inspiration.

Yes, sifting a pre mix is a golden piece of advice!!

Thanks Jenflea, I'll go steal my mums WW book and have a look. I don't know why I didn't think of that! It was a train cake on the front right???

Strange thing is, I don't remember my mum actually making any of those cakes, but we always had the book out and went through it before birthdays picking out which we wanted that year!!

I just made a cake for my daughter a few weeks ago (and I'm no baker!!). I got it from a website that sends you a box with absolutely everything in it you need. I made a lady bug cake and it had everything, a rolling pin, the cake mix, the icing mix and all the different coloured fondant icing all ready to roll out, it even had a disposable cake tin and 2 pipe cleaners for the ladybug's feeler thingys! All I needed was an egg and some butter. It also had awesome (and very easy to understand!) instructions. It was 'caketotherescue' and on their website they had heaps of designs. My little boy's birthday is in 4 weeks and I'm going for round 2 biggrin.gif

You can hire number tins from a place in Balcatta which makes number cakes very simple.

http://www.caketinznthingz.com.au/Tinhire.html

I made a "21" cake a few years ago using their tins and it was pretty straightforward - just be aware that the tins don't have a bottom so you need to cover them with foil and sit them on a flat tray to cook.

I used a Betty Crocker packet mix and pre made icing - which would be absolutely frowned upon by purists but if you don't have much time or expertise its a simple way to get a good result.

You can also hire cake tins from toy libararies - ours was hiring them out at $6 for a few days I think. Check out Op Shops as they may have tins too.

I bought my tin as I thought I'd get more use out of it. I used Something for Cake - they were very helpful and also told me to call them if I had any problems biggrin.gif

I had to make a Dolly Varden cake for the first time ever last week and used the white wings raspberry swirl sponge packet mix - worked like a charm and was light and yummy too...I was very surprised!

Another cheat option is to buy the sponges from Woolies or Coles and cut to size. Put in the fridge for a little while as it will make the icing easier (relief from crumbs).

I read a lot of the cake threads here on EB for advice too.

Good luck!
