I'm trying to organise something for my sisters big birthday this year and want something near the water if possible. Can be either a restaurant or club (preferably not too expensive) that is also child friendly.

Anyone have any suggestions? I prefer the north side of syd as that is easier for us. Not interested in Newport arms either but something in a similar vein would be ok.

If it's a lunch you could go to the Deck at Collaroy where the kids can step directly onto the beach and you can watch them easily. At night you can use the Deck but need to have a much larger group because it will be a private hire.

For a small group (12 or so) Pilu at Freshwater have a private room. The views are beautiful and so is the food but the $ are restaurant prices rather than cafe or beer garden level.

Lunch at Ripples Chowder Bay? The beach and playground are lovely, but maybe a bit far from the restaurant.

The Deck was crazy busy last time I went but it may not be as busy in August. Need to accommodate a grumpy old man (my dad)

This is a bit out of the box but this place at Headland Park Mosman does an amazing high tea (with savouries, scones, aandwiches, cakes and champers) set on a lawn where kids can run around, play football etc. You can eat at tables or on picnic blankets in the shade.

Not sure where in Sydney you were looking, but WatervieW in Bicentennial Park is really nice. There is also a great playground there that could occupy the kids.

We take our kids to Hugo's at Manly all the time. It's also a hit with my grumpy old father . Their set menu is ~$55 a head without drinks from memory.

There's also the Bavarian Beer Cafe and Manly Phoenix nearby. You don't get much more kid friendly than yum cha.

Royal Motor Yacht Club, Newport. Not sure if you have to be a member to organise a function.
I also second The Phoenix at Manly wharf.
