I seriously hate dentists I don't go regularly, in fact I can't think of when I went last, yes I know, totally bad and a situation I was going to rectify this year.

But I've just cracked a tooth, nearly in half and a large chunk came off I'm so annoyed at myself. How is something like that fixed? I've made an appt at the after hours dentist, but don't know if I need to do that or it can wait till Monday?

A lot of the time it can be built up with a filling initally, especially if the cracked bit doesn't go under the gumline(although it may have cracked because it was weakened by decay...deep decay can compicate things). I have broken teeth before, and ended up with a filling.


If it's not painful, or really cutting your tongue I would leave till Monday to save $. After hours dentists charge a lot I imagine.

Yep, agree with all this. I've been in the same boat and a filling has been the solution.

If it doesn't hurt OP, leave it till Monday. I was in at the dentist yesterday getting a cracked tooth fixed (filling) and we discussed it.

I've got the same thing. i REALLY wish i'd listened to mum when she told me to not open things with my teeth as a child. Sigh.
It's a molar so they filled it basically. HOWEVER, the last one they did porcelain and it only lasted 14 months, so I'll be going back to the amalgam as the first one lasted YEARS!
If there's no pain, you don't need emergency appointment as the root isn't exposed. If it was, you'd know about it!

Mine was chipped in half because the dentist did it when removing my wisdom tooth. He built it up with a filling.. Literally half one of my molars is made from filling material! He did an excellent job though, you'd never know!

I did one at the end of last year and have just finished having a root canal done! But I knew I was in trouble early on as it hurt with cold food/drinks and then it would hurt at night in bed.

I did that recently on one of my molars and needed a porcelain inlay at a cost of $1200. The only other option was a crown. The tooth that cracked had a large filling in it so that obviously made it more prone to cracking.

Is it a tooth (molar) at the back or is it in the front of your mouth. Dentists will try to save it these days and most of the time they can, but I have Bruxism (teeth grinding in sleep) and I really broke one of my molars in half and this had to be extracted. I always wear my mouthguard to bed now.

I too have a broken (molar) tooth) just in front of where my wisdom tooth would be - lol - & when it happened the only dentist in town was still closed for their Christmas break. It has stopped aching now & the sharp edge of my tooth only annoys me when I foolishly move my tongue there - so must get it checked. But ...I am trying to convince myself to have the tooth pulled out though, no-one will see a tooth way back there & the cost will hopefully be less than a repair job!! Like som pp's I think quite a few of my teeth are held together with fillings - oh the glorious days when dental nurses filled every space with black amalgam. So pleased that my (adult 3) kids have maybe 2 fillings b/w them all.
