A lovely couple I know have just become grandparents this morning and I wanted to give them something more than a card to say Congratulations. They use to read to my little girl when she was a baby and love books like we do, so I thought a nice childrens book would be nice for them to read to their new grandson, that they could keep at their house.
Sadly I am on a huge - no, make that massive, budget this week - a couple of large bills that are due and as I get paid monthly I wont get paid for another week. I will be seeing this couple on Tuesday and would like to have a little gift for them by then.
Where is the cheapest place to buy a nice children's book like 'Where is the Green Sheep?' or 'Hairy Maclary'??
My first thought was Big W however after looking online they are only $1 cheaper than our local bookshop at $16 and I'd have to drive a way to get there, whereas our local bookshop is at least close by.
I'm sorry if I sound really mean and stingy but its come at a really bad time and I just really cannot spend too much and $16 is slightly more than I hoped for. I've also just had to buy a birthday present for DD's friend, another baby gift for another friend of mine and my eldest DD has school photos this week!
Was hoping to spend $10 to $12 but on a nice classic well known book not something rubbishy...
Any store suggestions would be appreciated....
Otherwise I guess I'll have to pay the $17 at our local book shop. Gosh I do sound stingy dont I. If it only fell after next weeks pay I'd be fine!

Go to the post office quickly before it closes.

They often have quality kids books for much cheaper than anywhere else. (often in packs of 4 though, for $15 to $20, but maybe you could keep some for future gifts if you only want to give one).

Do you have a local Facebook garage sale site? Maybe ask of anyone has any brand new kids books?

Book depository is cheap - delivery may take a little while though so I guess it depends on how quickly you want it. Free postage too so that helps.

Where is the Green Sheep is less than $5 on there. Hairy Maclary is less than $10 for some of the books too.

If you are in QLD the newspapers are doing the coupons where books are $2. Two of the titles available are Hairy Maclary. There's 8 books all up. Others are Mem Fox and Graeme Base. Otherwise, second the post office. There's a Pamela allen and a Mem fox pack of 4 right now for $12.95.

Another suggestion - Dr Seuss soft cover books are $10 full price but Big w do them a little cheaper. I like giving the titles "O the Places you'll Go" and "Do you Know how Lucky you are". Both are a relevant read at 6 or 16!

I would probably still go to Big W. I find the prices online are not always what they are instore. Sometimes the stores have pretty good sales.

Do you have an 'All Books For Less" near you? Most books $5 or less. (last week everything was 50% off making most books $2.50) They are old stock and liquidated stock I think (A bit like Dirt Cheap Books used to be) but all brand new.

When I was in last week they had Dr Seuss, classics like Alice and Wonderland and also some gorgeous high quality baby board books and loads of soft covered picture books. Loads of different publishing houses represented. Depends what they have in

I purchased 3 books fro Dymocks, Castle Hill, NSW last week which cost me $5.00 each, including:

Nighty Night, Baby Boomsticks and BimBamBoom - all written by popular classic children's author Margaret Wild.

My 8 month old and nearly three year old love them, especially the last title - it is their current favourite (and both love where is the green sheep).
