Hi everyone, im just back from the emergency department where i went because of a bleed after intercourse, have to wait 4-5 hours for an ultrasound... so scared & cant sleep. Im 41, single and this is my first long dreamed of baby.
The bleeding had no clots and stopped within 90 minutes or so, but was definitely more than what i would call spotting - has anyone else had that happen & did it turn out ok?

Bleeding is surprisingly common in pregnancy, especially after an event like intercourse or over exercise.
Most of the times it's nothing.
How far along are you? Have you had an ultrasound during the pregnancy?

You did the right thing going to emergency but to be truthful if your not haemmoraging or at risk of extreme blood loss they won't do too much for you if your in early pregnancy as they can't prevent a miscarriage.
An ultrasounds hound be done to assess baby and check if there is a cause for bleeding.

Please try to rest and relax as you know it's best for baby. Good luck and its probably just one of those little hiccups along the way.

You don't mention how far along you are...but in my first pg, I had bleeding after intercourse... Bright red so of course scary.... I was told that there is more blood pumping around your vagina , cervix and general area so is much more sensitive and prone to bleeding ... Generally bubs is quite well protected and sex is fine of there are no other issues during pg....

Thanks for the reassurance ladies, sorry - im at the end of my tenth week. The bright red blood just made my heart sink, bleeding has still stopped and no major cramping so just trying to be positive but will feel so much better after an ultrasound later today confirms all ok - have to focus on how exciting it is to get another look

That happened to me too after intercourse with my last pregnancy. All was fine.

Sorry for the long answer but my story may help.
It could be a sub-chorionic haematoma. It's fairly common and just means that there is a clot or a sort of bruise in there that bleeds sometimes. Last pregnancy I had this. It started with the kind of bleeding you describe. I thought it was the end of our pregnancy, and off that first US they could only see a sac, no HB, and diagnosed an incomplete miscarriage. They scheduled further scans a few weeks later. At that scan, I almost fell off the table to see a beautiful little heartbeat blinking away.
Between 7 and 10 weeks I had maybe 6-8 instances of bleeding...and I'm talking suddenly gushing blood and clots the size of an orange. But we'd go to the ER and every time my baby was happy and healthy, and his little heartbeat was strong. We had 26 scans during my pregnancy and a whole lot of worry.
By 20 weeks the haematoma resolved and no more bleeding, as often tends to happen. Now I have a beautiful little 2 1/2 year old man to show for all of the drama.
I tell you my story because there is reason for hope. At 10 weeks, a scan will give you a definitive answer. I know waiting is agony.

Hopefully no cramping is a good sign (I had no cramping with the haematoma).
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. I'm 42 and I know how a pregnancy at this age is a very precious thing. I hope you get good news today.
Edited to add - sorry missed that it occurred after intercourse. That's good, hopefully just part of the crazy blood flow we have when pregnant. You have so much extra blood pumping that these kinds of things can happen. Last pregnancy I got freaky nosebleeds. Isn't pregnancy weird?!

i had something similar happen to me at 8 weeks this pregnancy. we had an extremely rare kid free night so had to make the most of it. but after the blanket was soaked in bright red blood, it literally looked like a horror movie. i was freaked, but DF was even worse. he didnt come near me for 5 weeks until after we had the 12 week scan.

for me the bleeding had stopped within an hour and in the morning was only a teeny bit pink when i wiped. 12 week scan showed no probs and i am here at 19 weeks and all is still fine.

I had a bleed after sex too. Went for a scan the next day and all was fine.

The sonographer (who was also a midwife) said it was really common to bleed after sex due to the extra blood flow in the pelvic area.

Thanks everyone, some amazing stories - pregnancy is definitely as weird as it is precious. The scan showed that everything was fine with the baby this afternoon - growing well and measured an extra 4 days cooked, very greatful that I got to watch as it wriggled around at great speed & now have 2 new photos for the album. Alls well that ends well, a good night sleep coming up.
