I just saw a warning about Aspartame on Facebook and the article said it was causing Leukaemia and Lymphoma in people and my DH has about 8 of these tablets in his cups of tea every day. Does anyone know if this is a real worry, or is someone trying to scare us? unsure.gif

I don't know but we have a friend who is a doctor who won't drink anything with Aspartame in it. I've never asked why.

I don't drink anything with sweeteners in it as its not natural,
that sweeteners cause cancer I have heard before,

Just curios does he have 8 tablets in one cup of tea??
They sweeteners are 200 - 600 times sweeter than sugar.
That can't be good for you.

Would not touch it even with someone else's ten foot pole!

It is approved as fit for human consumption though....

snopes.com disproved the FB post. I saw it too. It's been going around for years.

As far as safety goes - I can't imagine it is healthy for you but the litigation costs of them hiding test results showing it's carcenogenic would be too extreme to risk corporately.

Disclaimer: I am not a Dr and this is going off memory.

There was a journal article published about 5 or so years ago linking aspartame with a spate of 20 something year olds being diagnosed with MS, with no family history or other normal factors. They all drank diet drinks a lot and their symptoms were linked to high levels of aspartame. Big food companies that use it disputed the results.

Many people believe that it can build up in your system and cause damage to nervous system.

I do know someone at the moment who is undergoing tests for MS, motor neuron etc and it has been suggested by one Dr that it may be linked to their 3-4 can day diet cola habit.
