I haven't applied for a job for 5 years and have had 2 babies since then so my brain is a bit mushy. So am wondering which is best:

Application letter in the body of the email with the resume attached as a separate document,

OR

Body of email along the lines of "Dear Mr X, please find attached my Letter of Application and Resume for xx position. Kind regards GeminiSix" with the letter and resume attached as 2 separate word documents.

Any thoughts on what is the done thing?

I've always included the cover letter in the body of the email and attached the CV. If there are other documents required, such a selection criteria response, I attach that as well and still have the cover letter in the body.

That's what I would do as well. My current job was an online application, so I had to upload my cover letter and CV as separate documents to the company website.

I've done this. Except my cover letter is part of the the document which includes selection criteria and CV - so just one big document. I know that they simply print them all out and put in a pile to be read so I want to ensure that my cover letter stays with my SC and CV and doesn't get missed.

This is what I'd do. Where I work the applications are printed out to be shortlisted and presented to the interview panel. It looks nicer when the cover letter is printed from a properly formatted attachment rather than presented as a printed e-mail. While the content is the important thing of course, it never hurts to take an opportunity to demonstrate that you care about the way that documents are presented (especially if basic computer skills are required for the job).

Good point Georgie01 - it is an admin job so this is the way I will go.

Meant to add, don't attach Word documents. Convert them to PDF or the formatting will be lost.

You can download free PDF converter programmes that will do this for you if your word processor doesn't have it as an option.
