Hi there, I'd love to chat with any mums-to-be who are either hot yoga teachers or regular hot yoga practitioners - either Bikram or any other not-as-hot style of yoga. I've been teaching Bikram and hot power vinyasa for 3 years and have been a student for 6 years, and am in my first pregnancy. There is A LOT of opinions out there (unfortunately many from those who don't do the yoga) so I'd love to hear stories from anyone who's familiar with this yoga style and how you managed your pregnancy. Im still in my first tri - so being extra cautious - I'll be cutting back to teaching only a few classes a week - and expect to get back into the hot room practising in my 2nd tri. I 100% believe in my bodies cooling system (to sweat!) because I'm so use to the room. But am equally open to my body changing it's mind throughout the pregnancy. Will take it one step at a time. Are you a hot yogini? Did you practise throughout? Did you decide to stay out? Why? Happy Tuesday |

Hi OP,
I see you don't have any replies yet so although my response isn't related to yoga I thought I would share it. My pilates instructor won't let me do anything that heats me up to the point of sweating. Her research - as does mine - indicates that overheating the body is not good for the foetus, especially in the first trimester. I'll be starting yoga next week, but it will be a pregnancy class and not hot. HTH! |

HI there,
I am not an instructor but I try to do flow yoga and also body balance classes weekly. I probably have another week or two in me. Getting super uncomfortable doing different posses. I would recommend not to do hot yoga classes. I read a lot of articles advising not to sweat too much. As for different poses, I modify my poses to make sure I am comfortable. Like twists, I turn the other way. When everyone else is doing abs, I go on my foes and do cat and cow or pelvic floor exercises. Also being on all foes is good in the third trimester, helps the bub to stay or move into head down position. Good luck with your pregnancy. Doing gentle yoga will definitely help with staying fit and lower back pain. |

You will probably find later into your pregnancy that you are more warm than normal. That's becuase of all the extra blood your heart is pumping around. My friend who was pregnant during winter had her cat constantly trying to sit on her lap becuase it was the warmest spot! So you might find you don't have to be in the "hot" room to get the same effect. For myself I will be trying to cycle as long as possible and as long as I can do it safely. I certainly won't be during fast sprints or hill climbing, just long, slow rides. I went for a walk the other day in the heat and came home and threw up. Certainly, at least for me, getting hot isn't a good thing. |
