I am genuinely curious about why you have so much on? Is that 4 activities per child? Is there a rationale you could share?

Sure

Swimming is a necessity. We live surrounded by water.

Ballet/Gym is their passion (One for each)

Piano/singing (which was just piano but a singing spot came up and we are all there at the same time anyway so it is not technically 2 activities) . . .this is their music (very important as far as I am concerned)

And like I said Rollerskaing is an option extra that and be dropped for a week if necessary (although DD#1 is proving to be a very god figure skater)

Rational . . . .have difficulty justifying which one to drop as they all seem important.

4 yo DS

Does daycare 2 x 8 hour days
Preschool 1 x 6.5 hour day
1 x 1/2 hour swimming lesson

I would like to add 1 x 45 min gymnastics class

I would also like a music class in there, but finances won't stretch currently.

ETA I don't think he is overscheduled at all. Family would like to tell me differently when I mention that he is tired.

edited again because I typed the wrong word

8yo DD.

Monday: ballet and jazz
Tuesday: contemporary and stretch
Thursday: ballet

She will also be doing violin this year, not sure what days yet.

I know it's not as much as others, but I can see it getting very tiring very quickly. She would drop the violin before she dropped any dancing though.

Wipe your feet really good on the rhythm rug...
DD#2 is the busiest of my kids, and is doing 5 dance classes this year, one 45 minute swimming lesson plus one gymnastics - 2 classes on Thursdays and three on Saturdays, one on Wednesday and one on Friday. DS is doing karate, will pick up swimming at some stage (he refuses to at the moment) and DD#1 is doing nothing as yet (apart from talking on the phone, which could be an actual activity really rolleyes.gif ).

I don't think there's anything wrong with kids doing so much stuff that keeps them active! Why not? If you can afford it and they enjoy it, then who cares what other people think?

We have always made a conscious effort to avoid overscheduling DS. He has variously done swimming, preschool group music classes and French but never at the same time - only ever one activity in any term.
This term he will be starting piano for the first time (Tuesday during school), we'll keep up swimming since it's a summer term (Thursday after school), and he'll be back doing French (Monday after school) which he started in term 3 last year but teacher was away for term 4.
We'll drop swimming at the end of this term, so he'll be back to two, which I think is much more reasonable.

I agree that it is hard to pick between music, swimming and a language (unfortunately they don't get a language at primary school til year 4 at our school) as all are important. Our compromise is just to do swimming in the summer months. I think we'll keep up the swimming until he's 8 or so and is competent at all the strokes, and then he can switch to another sport.

I don't actually think we're overscheduled, but our activities take up after school on both the days I don't work, plus DH comes home early for 1 as well.

DS1 - Swimming 1x 1/2hr, karate 2x 45mins
DS2 - Swimming 1x 1/2hr
DD - Swimming 1x 1/2hr, Dancing 1x 1/2hr

Swimming is all on the same day and takes 1 hour total.
DS2 did a 2nd activity last year, but is in full time school this year and we haven't worked out what else he wants to do.
I don't consider daycare an activity - if DD doesn't go, I don't work, but she goes 3 days/wk.

Not overscheduled at the moment, but have been in the past. Working 6.30 to 4.30 meant daycare from 6 to 5 so no time for anything else, but when she started Prep I lost childcare options so worked school hours. She was at school from 8.15 until 2.45 then Monday was gymnastics from 3.30 to 4.30, Tuesday she had therapy, again 3.30 to 4.30, Wednesday guitar from 3.30 to 4 then taekwondo from 5.30 to 6.30, Thursday was taekwondo from 6 - 7, Friday was self defence from 4 - 5, Saturday was trampoline sports from 10 - 11 and athletics from 2 to 5, Sunday was Nippers lifesaving from 7 to 9.

Now she does swimming almost every day except Tuesday and Thursday for taekwondo. Saturday she does dance in the morning. Swimming is just us doing laps, not club.
