Hey all,

I've been reading an ancient copy of The Wishing Chair to my boys each night, and want to start on The Faraway Tree next, but am missing the first in the series.

I know they reprinted it, with new names for D!ck, Fanny and Dame Slap, but is the rest of the old fashioned way her books are written changed too?

I think part of the thing the kids enjoy about these books is the way they are written, and I'd hate to buy a new copy for them to be disappointed.

Thanks if anyone can help!

Hi. They have just changed the names. d*ck is Rick, Fanny is Franny and can't remember Dame Slaps new name. Pretty pathetic they changed it really, but the rest of the words are the same. You can GED the CD versions which Kate Winslet reads, which are pretty good too.
Enjoy

I've been on the lookout for original ones in second hand shops for years.

I refuse to buy any new versions as I loved the old ones so much and see nothing wrong with them. They were some of my favourite stories as a child.

blush.gif Sorry! My question wasn't very clear! I just want to know if the new versions are still written in old fashioned style?

I read the originals when I was a kid and I've read the updated ones to my daughter and I don't think there's a lot of difference other than the names.

I don't know, I would hope and assume they just changed the names. (a quick wiki search says alterations have been made to some books to change racist and sexist remarks). But perhaps you could get old copies off ebay or something and then you wouldn't have to worry.

Namie, you're in Vic aren't you?

My aunty works in an OP shop and grabs them quite often. I can ask her to keep a look out for any particular ones you're after, if you like?

I'd look for something similar OP, I refuse to buy any new versions as the classics don't need editing as far as I'm concerned! I had no issue reading about d*ck and Fanny as a 6-7 year old (and have kept all the original versions I have, including the entire Famous Five series inhard cover!!)
