I am trying to find more info online but I was wondering if anyone knew about whether or not you can drink a meal replacement style shake that you make or the pre-made type while you are pregnant?
I usually have one every morning for breakfast, more because if I don't I wont have anything :s Currently we are trying to conceive and it just occurred to me I might not be able to take them while pregnant. |

You would have to check the packaging. What does it say on what you currently use? There usually would be a disclamer like "not suitable for pregnant women or children" if you can't.

No, ive never read a packaging for meal replacement where you can. They do state "not for consumption for pregnant or lactating women". Make a fruit smoothy in the mornings will be better for you and bub.

They are generally a NO-NO due to the synthetic vitamins that are in them - also means they are unsuitable while breastfeeding...
(this is what I was told when I wanted to join TF while still feeding DD at 14 months) Something like the Bel-vita breakfast snacks might be better if you really can't have breakfast... or the up and go breakfast popper things |

You may want to reconsider drinking them while TTC too, you may not be getting enough essential nutrients or calories to assist with conception. Generally any strict dieting or unnatural/synthetic chemicals can affect your ability to conceive.
Why not a smoothie as PP suggested, if you really can't face food? |

I checked with my OB and I'm allowed to have the 100% whey ones. I have it for breaks but it's a high quality protein shake

If you like the shakes because you hate "real" food first thing in the morning, would and UpAndGo drink work instead?

Could you have an up'n'go or something similar? Not sure if they have 'synthetic' vitamins though. (What on earth is a synthetic vitamin anyway? My OB recommended taking pregnancy multivitamins, surely that's similar...?)
I would think that eating a shake for breakfast would be far better than not eating breakfast at all when pregnant. Although you get so hungry towards the end I suspect you'll want breakfast anyway! |

I work for a sports nutrition retailer and we do not recommend any (including the 100% whey) without consulting your GP or medical specialist, when pregnant or lactating.
They are not meant to be taken as regular meal replacements, but as more of a "once in a while replacement" anyway. |

My understanding was that you can't use them due to the high levels of Vitamin A which can cause birth defects.
