Hi everyone! I've been looking through the posts and it looks like I'll be able to get some good and honest advice from you guys (hopefully!) as I do not want to discuss names with people in real life after a bad experience when naming my 2 year old daughter (Emma).
I'm coming up to 20weeks and my husband and I are struggling to find something we both agree on. We'd both prefer something not too popular (though obviously we named our first a top 20 name!). Not sure if its a boy or girl yet. If you could comment on the names we have so far that would be great (and we'd love suggestions as well). Here is our list so far: Girls: Violet (I love, DH not keen on, says it reminds him of "violent") Rose (DH loves, I'm put off my all the girls with this as a middle name) Summer (too close to Emma?) Olivia (we don't know any babies with this name but according to all the lists it is a VERY popular name which concerns me). Eliza (DH's fave - I'm reluctant as it might be a bit matchy-matchy starting with E) Penelope (DH not keen on) Boys: Evan (too similar to Emma?) Joshua (reluctant to use as it is my brothers name!) William (very popular..) Noah (DH doesn't like) Our last name starts with F so any names starting or ending in a F/PH sound funny.. Sorry the spacing went weird (using iPad), hopefully I've fixed it This post has been edited by LittleFinch: 02/02/2013, 08:32 AM |

Violet- lovely, but more a middle name for me
Rose- nice, but I much prefer Rosetta, however just Rose goes better with Emma Summer- lovely, but yes, definitely too close to Emma Olivia- lovely Eliza- lovely, but I'd definitely avoid a second E first name Penelope- ok, I'm liking it a bit more lately Evan- ok, but like Eliza, definitely not as a first name with Emma Joshua- lovely, but I wouldn't use it if it's your brothers name. Intentional or not, everyone is going to think you named the baby after him William- nice Noah- lovely I would choose Olivia and Noah with Emma. I wouldn't worry about names being too popular because Emma has always been pretty common for years even if it's not extremely popular right now. Suggestions: Emma and Lara Emma and Zoe Emma and Charlotte Emma and Caitlin Emma and Claire/Clara Emma and Sophie/Sophia Emma and Laura/Lauren Emma and Hannah Emma and Sally Emma and Madeleine Emma and Scarlett Emma and Isla Emma and Alexandra Emma and Natasha Emma and Lucinda Emma and Ruby Emma and Zara Emma and Heidi Emma and Matilda Emma and Susannah Emma and Bethany Emma and Nicola Emma and Monique Emma and Claudia Emma and Tessa/Tess Emma and Maisie Emma and Lydia Emma and Holly Emma and Poppy Emma and Ada Emma and Georgia Emma and Adelaide Emma and Stephanie Emma and Lachlan Emma and Oliver Emma and Miles Emma and Isaac Emma and Thomas Emma and Seth Emma and Patrick Emma and Lewis Emma and Oscar Emma and Timothy Emma and Alexander Emma and Jacob Emma and Mitchell Emma and Lucas/Luke Emma and Owen Emma and Fraser Emma and Callum Emma and Connor Emma and Matthew Emma and Micah Emma and Darcy Emma and Quinn Emma and Adam Emma and Jude Emma and Julian Emma and Nathaniel Emma and Daniel Emma and Damien Emma and Dean Emma and Theodore Emma and Samuel Emma and Hamish Emma and Harrison Emma and Henry |

My cousins are Emma and Eliza! I think the names are lovely together. I also love Penelope from your list. Olivia is nice with Emma too, it probably depends where you are whether a lot of Olivias pop up.
The boys' names are nice but I'm not sure if any is right with Emma based on what you've said. I'm thinking Owen or Julian would be good. |

I really love your listS.
Olivia is my least favourite of your girls names. My favourite would be Violet. I don't see violent when I read that name, I think first and foremost of the flower and so that would be my choice. (I love Summer too but it is to close to Emma IMO.) I love Rose too, a close second and its popularity as MN would not bother me at all. Most MNs disappear in day-to-day life. I wouldn't use Eliza (though I love it) because of having two E initials and Penelope is DIVINE if you DH comes around. Noah is my clear favourite of your boys names. |

Violet (I love, DH not keen on, says it reminds him of "violent")
I was about to say just this. All I hear is Violent too. Rose (DH loves, I'm put off my all the girls with this as a middle name) I agree with you. I think the life has been sucked out it. Summer (too close to Emma?) Yes, I think so. Olivia (we don't know any babies with this name but according to all the lists it is a VERY popular name which concerns me). Very popular and I really dislike it. Eliza (DH's fave - I'm reluctant as it might be a bit matchy-matchy starting with E) Absolutely love it and it goes with Emma beautifully even though they start and end with the same letter. Penelope (DH not keen on) I agree with your DH. Boys: Evan (too similar to Emma?) Yes I think it is too close. They both start with the 'EH' sound where as the E in Emma and Eliza does not. Joshua (reluctant to use as it is my brothers name!) I really like it. I can see how you would be reluctant though. William (very popular..) Very popular. I'd go with something else personally. Noah (DH doesn't like) I agree with your DH. It's ok I suppose but I've never seen the appeal. I love biblical names too but this one just leaves me flat. We have an Emma and Claire in our family. They have a brother William, known as Will.
I think all the names go well together and they age well. This lot are in their 30's. |

From your lists my picks are Eliza and William. I don't think 2 'e's is too matchy.

Girls:
My pick is Rose. I really like Emma and Rose as a sibset. I just like the classic simplicity of Rose. As a first name it's not overly popular which is a definite plus. Eliza would be nice too. Summer wouldn't go and Olivia is overused IMO. I'm not a fan of the other two names. Suggestion: Rosa Boys: All great names. William, Noah and Joshua may be more popular than you want, however. If that's not too much of a problem I would pick Noah or William with an Emma. I'm not overly keen on Evan with Emma. Suggestions: Miles Leon Felix Silas Louis Jonah Hugo This post has been edited by Gudrun: 02/02/2013, 09:59 AM |
