DD2 has just been diagnosed with slap cheek and I asked if it could be a problem for me as I am pregnant as she said it will be fine.
I googled for more info and discovered that it can be a bad thing for a pregnant woman as it can cause anemia in the baby and I already have antiE antibodies which can do the same. Any advise on what I should do next? This post has been edited by *~~Jess~~*: 07/02/2013, 07:13 PM |

Contact your ob/midwife team ASAP for some more specific advice, but apparently most of the time everything is fine. I think people who deal with pregnancy all the time would be able to give you more reassurance and advice.

You need a blood test to check your immunity. If you are immune there is no problems, if you are not you need further care/monitoring.
My kids got it when I was pregnant last time too. |

Yeah my son had it when my sister was pregnant and her ob did the blood test on her to check if she was already immune or not.
The risks were anemia and still-birth (in severe cases) if I remember correctly. If they have already said its fine i'd try not to worry but definitely call your ob (or whoever's care your under) and check in with them. xo |

Not to alarm you (I really don't know much about slap cheek) but I think an EBer lost their bubby to Parvovirus (the virus that causes slap cheek). So I would be checking with the drs about how serious it is and what to do etc.

Hi Jess,
My heart always skips a beat and then sinks when i see Slap Cheek in a title thread. Unfortunately i did lose my baby because of slap cheek i actually caught it from my daughter when i was 5 weeks pregnant but at the time i had no idea she even had it, all she had was what seemed like a cold and some rosy cheeks. At 11 weeks pregnant the alarm bells rang at daycare and the director informed all pregnant mums about it, I panicked called my OB and he said to get a blood test done the problem was the blood test results weren't accurate they showed that i was immune to slap cheek but not infected that is because i was infected a whole 6 weeks ago so it seems like the timing of that blood test is important so my Ob said great your immune everything will be fine. At 22 weeks my baby boy's heart stopped beating it took less then 2 weeks for us to receive the preliminary autopsy results they found the parvo virus in my sons liver my life changed forever. Supposedly if you catch parvo very early in the pregnancy it can be deadly for the baby because there is no placenta to protect it my son didn't have a chance. But if you catch it after 20 weeks there is a good chance the baby won't be affected please take this seriously you have been exposed and you need to be very closely monitored i hope you have a positive outcome but i know i am not the only woman who has lost their unborn baby to this deadly virus I wish you and your baby all the best |

Thanks caroldiem, I spoke to nurse on call and I have to get checked out ASAP because of my antibody issue. Just have to find a decent GP open at 8pm on a Friday night. I did ring the hospital but they wouldn't put me through to the birthing suite because its still early in the pregnancy.

It is likely that you are already immune having been already exposed to the virus.
If you start to feel unwell or have viral symptoms you should get tested and treatment right away, as in 1/3 of cases the virus can be passed to the baby and can be fatal - not just anaemia. |
