bellamy's porridge alternative, how to make your own porridge

Hi I've been using the Bellamy's Organic Baby Porridge since my son was 5 months old, now that he is nearly 7 months, he is eat quite a larger portion for breakfast these days and it is getting quite expensive to keep up. Does anyone have any ideas/recipes/suggestions on how to make baby porridge? Sourcing the organic ingredients wont be a problem, just want to know what to ask for etc. The ingredients on the package are, oats, rice, corn. Hope someone out there can help. Thank you Nenou

Why not just switch him to regular porridge? You can buy a bag of quick oats for $1 or so at Woollies, it would last ages! This post has been edited by tick: 31/01/2013, 08:10 AM

At 7 months you can just make him normal porridge with oats and water. I also grind up other grains (rice, barley, millet) using a stick blender, and make porridge from those. They do take longer to cook (about 10 minutes).

At 7 months we gave our DD Weetbix. You can get the wiggles ones that are reduced salt if that worries you. We just warmed it up so we could mush it up a bit for her. Worked perfectly for us

We used the same stuff, and changed for the same reasons, was getting damn expensive! We changed him to weetbix with no drama.

I make porridge from normal rolled oats for DS, with cow's milk but you could use breast or formula too. Mix equal parts milk and rolled oats (say 1/4 cup of each) in a small saucepan, bring to boil and simmer for 3-5 minutes. I've been chopping up some pears as well and putting in the pot, then blending up together. Delicious!

The rolled oats are the same price and are nutritionally better, I just make myself a coffee whilst the oats are soaking in the milk. I used to buy organic oats from a health food store and I certainly thought they tasted better but not so much better to justify the huge difference in cost.

Why don't you just use quick oats? 99c for a 1kg bag from Aldi! I just make it up with a bit of water on the stove, and mix in a cube or so of pureed apple for a little bub. Easy. My girls are now 2 and 4 and still love their porridge, but no longer have puree apple in it, just whatever other sliced up fruit I have at the time in the house.
