Ok yesterday I was brushing my daughters hair and she said "mummy look in my ear" so I had a look and there I see a corn kernal inside (uncooked popcorn) it is visible and if she kept still easily grabbed and pull out. Anyway after a few attempts myself I take her to the GP and he tries the same thing but she just wouldn't sit still. So he refers us to the ER. When we get there the triage nurse tries but no luck. So we get admitted and we wait 2 hours and I think it's ok, surely the doctors can get this out with a bit of sedation so she is still and relaxed. We get called through and they try the same method as what my GP and the triage nurse did. No luck and by this time she was really kicking up a fuss. The doctor said do you mind holding her tightly and letting her cry and I said no, she will forget about it once its out. So me, another nurse held her but he just couldn't get it. So they say sorry we cant sedate her as it needs to be atleast 8 hrs since food. You will have to come back tomorrow. I cant go back today. I have no car today & no one else to watch my other 2 children. Obviously if this was making her sick I wouldn't of left the ER last night but you would think there is nothing wrong with her. I know this needs to come out and I just wondered if there are any other tips to try and get this out. It looks like it has moved slightly, still visible and i reckon even a slight suction it would come out. All the methods I have read up on seem easy but she just wont sit still. My eldest daughter is back at school tomorrow (yipee!!!) So if I fail again today I will have to go up there again. I just wished they tried something else.
I am hoping it just falls out....wishful thinking I know!!!!!

When you ask her to sit still does she understand that you are trying to take it out? I would just keep reminding her that its not hurting, just feels funny and if she wants it out she has to sit still, otherwise she cant play; swim; go to the park; have her favourite treat etc etc.

I would also give her something to occupy her with - ipod; book; music; lolly while I get it out.

If you think a bit of suction might work, can you use a syringe and see if you can put it near enough to suck the kernel onto the end. Something like a nurofen dispenser is what I am thinking about. No liquid in it though.

You are right in the fact that it has to come out, it will eventually start to decay and rot if it stays there or gets wet.

How heavy a sleeper is she? Thats the only other alternative, is to do it in her sleep.

Have you tried one of those 'bogey sucker' Things? They sell them with the saline drops for babies noses when they're stuffed. It won't have a large anough tube to actually suck it into the ball at the end but it should at least be able to suction onto it?

I would be careful about attempting to remove it yourself, it may accidentally go in further and be harder to remove.

Call in every favour you can and take her back to the hospital.

Good luck, I hope it's out soon. My DD did this as well.

This. Ears are pretty sensitive little organs so I'd leave it to the Drs/Nurses in ED. You don't want to damage her ear. Good luck!

I'd try as hard as I could to get back to the ER. I had something stuck in my ear a while back (don't ask) and tried to get DBF to get it out, he ended up pushing it in further and it hurt like crazy.

If it was my DD I would have just pinned her down while the doctor got it out. Short term pain for long term gain grin.gif

I forgot to add this was me and my DH last night. He was holding a little torch and i have the tweezers but even in her sleep she was moving away. Then we stupidly woke her up! She is usually a heavy sleeper.

I am going to stop obsessing now and go back to the ER tomorrow morning after I have dropped off DD at school. I wont leave until it's out. Thanks for all replies!
